A hummingbird landed on a students hand and it sparked an amazing unit study! For math students calculated wing beats, time spent eating vs flying, and measure distances flown to calculate some basic statistics. Science class consisted of learning more about hummingbird habitats and language arts was filled with interesting books about hummingbirds!

This is a few steps from our outdoor classroom. The kids wanted to know what kind of tree it is, because it looks different from the surrounding trees in the orchard.

Science time!

We gathered evidence: We took a few of what looked like peach pits from under the tree. We carefully observed the color and shape of the blossoms. We noted the size of the tree and the way the branches grow.

Then we started searching.

There's an adjacent orchard, which we know from the fall harvest is filled with nectarine trees. Guess what we found! Fruit pits under the trees which matched the ones we had collected. Similar color and shape of blossoms. Similar tree size and branches.

Conclusion: That's a nectarine tree blossoming amid all those young apple trees!
