We promote walking and biking to school through education, encouragement, evaluation and engagement.

The Sonoma County Safe Routes to School program, funded by the county Measure M transportation tax, Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality funding, Safe Routes to School state &/or federal funds, and Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit supports grassroots Safe Routes to School efforts by providing guidance and resources to interested schools. The goal of Safe Routes to School programs is to encourage walking and bicycling where it is safe, and to advocate for needed changes where biking or walking is not safe. SRTS programs use an integrated approach that includes five E's - encouragement, education, evaluation, engagement, and equity. A school can launch a SRTS program with just one component, and build from there. In doing so, SRTS programs address health and safety by reducing traffic congestion around schools, increasing physical activity, encouraging lifestyle changes for families, creating safer, calmer streets and neighborhoods, and improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, the Sonoma County Department of Health Services, and the Sonoma County Transportation Authority partner to implement this program.

🚶‍♀️🚲🛴 Walk, Bike or Roll to School on October 7!

Join students and families across Sonoma County in celebrating International Walk & Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 7. Led locally by the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, this annual event encourages students to walk, bike, scooter, skate or roll to school while promoting healthy habits, safer routes and active transportation.

Even if you can only walk or ride part of the way, every trip counts. Let's make the trip to school a little healthier, safer and more fun!

Thank you to all the wonderful SCBC Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition member volunteers who helped us with bagging swag for our annual International Walk & Roll to School Day event! We had to count and organize hundreds of posters, stickers, banners, pencils, pencil sharpeners, little notebooks and more into bags for 63 participating schools. Bags are then delivered to all those schools by another set of over 15 additional volunteers! It really takes a village to get these fun promotional items to our partner schools, and we appreciate all of the SCBC members who support this effort!

Welcome back to school! We are excited to start walking and rolling to school – and anywhere – this year! This September, we challenge you to form a group with two or more students or families to walk or roll to school or to another destination for fun, connection, and safety in numbers! Form a group with two or more students from neighboring families to walk (or park & walk), scooter, bike, carpool, or ride the bus together. Then, tell us your travel success story so we can share it to inspire others! We will select three inspiring buddy travel groups to highlight in our newsletter, and will award $50.00 to each of the winning travel groups! &roll
