It's called the relative age effect.

Kids born right after the league cutoff can be nearly a year older than their teammates, which at age eight is a huge developmental edge. Coaches see that edge and call it talent, then pour attention into those kids while the younger ones drift away.

We develop every kid at their own pace, so a birthday doesn't decide who gets a real shot.
