Author: JULIAN BRAVE NOISECAT is a writer, Oscar-nominated filmmaker, champion powwow dancer, and student of Salish art and history. His writing has appeared in dozens of publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The New Yorker. NoiseCat has been recognized with numerous awards including the 2022 American Mosaic Journalism Prize and many National Native Media Awards. He was a finalist for the Livingston Award and multiple Canadian National Magazine Awards, and was named to the TIME100 Next list in 2021. His first documentary, Sugarcane, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary. Directed alongside Emily Kassie, Sugarcane premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where NoiseCat and Kassie won the Directing Award in U.S. Documentary. NoiseCat is a proud member of the Canim Lake Band Tsq̓éscen̓ and descendant of the Líl̓wat Nation of Mount Currie. We Survived the Night is his first book.

We acknowledge that we gather at Santa Rosa Junior College on the territorial traditional land of the Pomo People in Santa Rosa and the Coast Miwok People in Petaluma, past and present, and honor with gratitude the land itself and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations. This land acknowledgement calls us to commit to continuing to learn how to be better stewards of the land we inhabit.

We recognize that every member of the Santa Rosa Junior College community has benefitted, and continues to benefit, from the use and occupation of this land since the institution’s founding in 1919. Consistent with our values of community and diversity, we have a responsibility to acknowledge and make visible the colleges’ relationship to Native peoples. By offering this Land Acknowledgement, we affirm Indigenous sovereignty and will work to hold Santa Rosa Junior College more accountable to the needs of American Indian and Indigenous peoples.

As a step toward honoring the truth and achieving healing and reconciliation, Santa Rosa Junior College commits to open all public events and gatherings with a statement acknowledging the traditional Pomo and Coast Miwok lands on which we stand. Such statements become truly meaningful when coupled with authentic relationships and sustained commitment. New SRJC Multicultural Museum exhibit opens tomorrow! Bill Smith (Dry Creek Pomo and Bodega Bay Miwok) and his family are celebrated in a new exhibit opening at the Multicultural Museum on September 5th, 2025. Without Bill Smith, the SRJC Museum Director from 1975-1978, our museum would not be Native American-focused and, in fact, would probably not exist at all. Bill Smith’s daughter, Sherrie Smith-Ferri, is the guest curator of this exquisite variety of her family’s creative talents, which includes basket weaving (both traditional and contemporary), painting, photography, beadwork, and much more. Join us for the reception on Friday, September 5th, 4-6 pm, or come see the exhibit, which will be up for the entire semester.
This exhibition also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the SRJC Jesse Peter Memorial Native American Museum's opening on Sept. 27, 1975.
