Let us not forget August 18, 1619.
More than 400 years ago, the first recorded Africans in English North America arrived in Virginia after being forcibly taken from their homeland and carried across the Atlantic.
Their arrival marked the beginning of generations of exploitation and oppression—but also centuries of resilience, resistance, achievement, and an undeniable impact on the building of America.
Today, we honor those who endured, those who resisted, and the generations who came after them. Their history is American history.
