We know the answer.

We’ve done this before.

We have the experience.

So we talk.

And talk.

But leadership isn’t about proving how much you know.

It’s about bringing out the best in the people around you.

Ask more questions.

Listen longer.

Give someone else the opportunity to solve the problem.

The best leader in the room doesn’t always need to be the loudest voice in the room.

METALLICA AT THE SPHERE! 🤘🔥

What an incredible experience!

For a band in their 60s, these guys sound absolutely amazing. The energy, the musicianship, the sound—Metallica still brings it!

Kicking off the show with “Battery” set the tone for the entire night. And hearing “Master of Puppets” live? Unbelievable!

But the Sphere itself is something you have to experience to understand. The visuals, sound, and immersive technology take a concert to an entirely different level. The photos don’t begin to capture it.

I would highly recommend seeing ANY show at the Sphere. Even if it’s not your favorite artist, the venue alone is worth the experience.

And getting to share this night with Jennifer, Devyn, and Matthew made it even better.

One of those nights we’ll be talking about for years!

Most mornings, my sunrise photos feature the beach. 🌅

This morning, a little different view.

The Statue of Liberty, the New York skyline, a castle, and the Las Vegas Strip—all glowing in the early morning sunlight.

Nearly 20 years since my last visit to Las Vegas, and this trip has given me an entirely new appreciation for this city.

The architecture. The experiences. The memories with my family. And the opportunity to see familiar places through a completely different lens.

Same sun. Different scenery. Different chapter of life.

One last full day in Vegas, and tonight we finish it off with some hockey! 🏒

Grateful for the view, the journey, and the people I get to share it with.

When leaders bring me a problem, one of my favorite questions is:

“What did you want to happen?”

It sounds simple.

It isn’t.

Because sometimes we’ve become so consumed by what went wrong that we haven’t clearly defined what RIGHT should look like.

Start with the outcome.

What did you want to happen?

Then work backward.

What process would produce it?

Who owns it?

What needs to be communicated?

What needs to be trained?

How will we know it’s working?

Start with the outcome. Work backward. Build the system.

That’s systems thinking.

There is no cap on your capacity to grow.

I believe that.

But growth doesn’t happen simply because another year passes.

Growth requires intentionality.

New ideas.

New experiences.

New relationships.

New challenges.

And sometimes letting go of something that worked really well at your last level.

Wherever you are in your leadership journey, don’t convince yourself you’ve arrived.

There’s another version of you waiting to be developed.

Keep growing.

There was a time when I took pride in being the answer to almost every question.

Problem? Bring it to me.

Decision? I’ll make it.

Something went wrong? I’ll fix it.

It felt like leadership.

Eventually I realized I was creating something very different:

Dependency.

If every important decision eventually comes back to you, you haven’t built leadership capacity.

You’ve built dependency.

The goal isn’t to become less valuable.

The goal is to make everyone around you more capable.

That’s leadership capacity.

Happy Birthday to my best friend.

We’ve been friends for almost 40 years—which is pretty incredible to even type.

And somehow, after all these years, this last trip around the sun may have been one of our biggest yet.

We traveled the world together. Opened doors at the Vatican. Walked the Colosseum. Added four more baseball stadiums to our list.

We watched our baby girl graduate from high school and then somehow found the strength to move her into college.

We moved. Bought a new home. Started another chapter.

And when I went through one of the most difficult professional transitions of my life, you guided me through it with a steadiness and confidence that made everything feel like it was going to be okay.

And somewhere in between all of that, you prepared more than 2,000 meals for your family this year—although I’m pretty sure more than half of them were just for Matthew. 😂

That’s you.

You take care of us. You believe in us. You make the adventures better, the hard days easier, and wherever we are feel like home.

Almost 40 years of friendship. A lifetime of memories. And I still can’t think of anyone I’d rather take another trip around the sun with.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned about leadership:

What got you here may not get you there.

The skills that made you an exceptional teacher won’t automatically make you an exceptional principal.

The habits that helped you lead 10 people may not work when you’re responsible for 100.

And the leadership that got your organization to one level may not take it to the next.

That doesn’t diminish what got you here.

It simply means:

Your next level will require something new from you.

Never stop growing.
