THE GIST

Developmental or Academic, right? Yes, that’s the hot question… but only part of it. In terms of an educational philosophy, we created a blended approach that provides children with the best of both. Beginning with an emergent curriculum, children are gradually exposed to components of traditional education as they progress through the school. We think, we re-think, we create, and we listen. We do what makes sense, and promise never to become complacent.

The Piper philosophy, however, extends beyond the curriculum. We love what we do, and put our hearts into every detail. Our administration consists of seven… three former parents, one current, one former teacher, an expert in our wide-spread community, and an all-star who had thirty years on us before we broke ground. As for our teachers, they are our village – the one it takes. And boy, are they amazing.

In The Beginning…
Crystal, our co-founder (and not included in that count), began her career by working in Admissions at Brentwood School. It was during this experience that she saw a need for quality preschools in Los Angeles. She came home one day with an idea and drew floorplans on a napkin… literally. A year and a half later, in 2009, Cassidy Preschool opened in Santa Monica. Leaving Cassidy in 2013, the vision continued as Piper opened in January 2014.

Not being from LA, we’ve seen how friends become family and how a preschool setting is the perfect way to make some. Whether it’s to grab a coffee, schedule a play date, or plan a vacation, a sense of community is at our core. Since 2009, we’ve been amazed to watch our community grow. From home-cooked meals to high-fives in the hallway, it always feels like home.

As a new parent or a parent of many, Piper is a place to share worries, seek advice, and celebrate the wins. The decision to share these intimate years of your child’s life with us isn’t taken lightly. We’re humbled by your trust and can’t wait for your family to join ours.

We also try to live by four very basic principles found in a book called The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. While it isn’t always easy, we expect it of ourselves and encourage it from others. It’s a common topic of discussion with our staff, and a good reminder of how life should be lived, how others should be treated, and how to be your best self. These are the four principles that have carried us through some tough times… and made the good ones even better.

BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD
Speak with integrity. Speak only the truth. Say only what you mean, avoid gossip, and don’t talk negatively about others.

DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say or do is a projection of their own reality. Don’t worry about things you can’t control. Let it ride, take the high road, and stay positive.

DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS
Find the courage to ask questions, dig a little deeper, and be able to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as possible so you can avoid misunderstandings. And check your ego at the door.

ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST
Under all circumstances, simply do your best. No matter what you do, where you are in life, or who you know… just do your best. Do what’s right, and you’ll never be in the wrong.
