Parents: Know Before They Ride

SMPD is seeing an increase in juveniles riding electric motorcycles and high-powered e-bikes recklessly on public streets, sidewalks, and other public spaces. These vehicles are not toys. Many are capable of speeds that make them unsafe and unlawful for children to operate on public roadways.

When riders ignore traffic laws or operate recklessly, they put themselves, pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and officers at risk. In some cases, riders have failed to stop when officers attempt to contact them, sometimes while trying to create social media content, creating additional safety concerns for the rider, the public, and responding personnel.

Parents and guardians should also know that allowing a child to unlawfully operate an electric motorcycle or other motorized vehicle can have consequences. Depending on the circumstances, parents may be cited, the vehicle may be impounded, and criminal liability may be considered if a child is placed in danger or someone is injured.

Before buying or allowing your child to ride one of these vehicles, make sure you know:
• Whether it is legally classified as an e-bike, moped, motorcycle, or off-highway vehicle
• Where it can legally be ridden
• Whether a driver’s license, registration, helmet, or other requirements apply
• Whether your child is legally permitted to operate it

SMPD’s goal is to prevent serious injuries before they happen.

Ride legally. Ride safely. Parents, please know the rules before handing over the keys.

The SMMUSD Sustainability Manager has released the May Bike It Walk It results:

“Edison Language Academy scored 46% participation; this is a sizeable jump from 38% in October 2025 and 33% in May 2025! Understanding many Edison students commute from a distance, we are very grateful for your school’s participation in this event.”

Thanks to PTA members for helping with counting and for everyone who participated by biking, walking, scootering, etc.! 🚲🚶‍♀️🛴

Ayer tuvimos un Festival espectacular! Gracias a todos los padres por participar y brindar a los estudiantes la oportunidad de aprender un poco más de la rica diversidad de culturas que tiene nuestra comunidad. Hay tantas fotos que las puedes ver en Konstella (solo para los usuarios inscritos) y compartir también tus fotos ahí.

Yesterday, we had a spectacular festival! Thank you to all the parents for participating and giving the students the opportunity to learn a little more about the rich diversity of cultures within our community. There are so many photos that you can view them on Konstella (for registered users only)—and you can share your own photos there as well!
