A student says one word. It’s a noun. We assume it’s a request and hand over whatever they’re asking for or completely ignore them if we already gave them that thing.
But sometimes that word isn’t a request at all. It’s a comment. A label. Or even a question we didn’t catch because they didn’t have enough words to spell it out.
I dig into moments exactly like this in my session for the Child Led Autism Summit this year, how to notice a student’s strengths and building from there instead of defaulting to “they want something.”
Registration is completely FREE and I am honored to be presenting amongst and all-star team of presenters! Including AAC users and Autistic adults 🙂🥳✨

If you remove every prompt and nothing’s left, that’s not bad news. That’s information telling you exactly where to support a child next.
The goal was never a student who imitates well. It’s a student who initiates, on their own, with language that belongs to them.
Does this resonate? I’d love to hear from you.😍✨

Asking for some extra love today ❤️
My mom is having another brain surgery today in her cancer healing journey. If you have a moment, would you keep her in your prayers or send some healing thoughts and positive energy her way? She is struggling with expressive communication and so we are hopeful the surgery will bring back full communication skills 🙏🏻
I truly believe there’s power in collective energy coming together with love, hope, and intention. Thank you for holding her—and our family—in your hearts. It means more than you know!! Xoxo✨💗

I spent a whole session modeling “go” before I realized the kid wasn’t asking to go anywhere! Matching the exact word/phrase to a student’s real intention changes everything about how much prompting they need, and it’s the #1 thing I teach SLPs and parents working with AAC learners.
Would love for you to join my presentation at Preschool Autism Summit (July 12 to 15) and get professional development hours in the process! The best part? The whole event is completely free.

The prompting fix that changed everything for me: start with the LEAST support a moment needs, not the most. And this is the #1 skill I teach SLPs and parents when working with AAC learners. The truth is most “prompt-dependent” students have never had adequate space to learn how to communicate on their own.
Would love for you to join my presentation at Preschool Autism Summit (July 12 to 15) and get professional development hours in the process! The best part? The whole event is completely free!

AAC ALLY —- Doors close Friday!
Buy-in doesn’t come from better explaining, It comes from better listening.
These 4 questions have changed more AAC outcomes than any strategy I’ve used. What questions do you find helpful for AAC buy in?

She kept saying “muffin”… and nothing in the room explained it until I started playing detective and talked to mom.
They had gotten a muffin together before our last session. She wasn’t labeling—
she was sharing a memory of our last session! And perhaps she was even wondering where her muffin was LOL.
This is the tricky part of AAC... our students start off communicating with single words when they actually have a much bigger message.
I share stories like this inside AAC Ally: Treatment AND I show you how to thing a layer deeper in these moments to help students expand their language without so many breakdowns.
Have you had an experience similar to this?

AAC ALLY and 20% off ends at midnight (no coupon needed!)
I used to think better sessions = more progress. But AAC can’t rely on us always being there, because the reality were usually only there a few times per week (at best!)
Everything changed when I started prioritizing supporting the entire team, not just the student via coaching practices.
I am super proud of the coaching module in this course and have gotten awesome feedback from those already inside the course!
The course is open but the discount ends tonight—Check comments!👇🏻
