Rodolfo Acuña, writer, professor and Chicano studies pioneer, dies at 93

From street protests to campus debates, in writings and speeches, the son of Mexican immigrants made a career out of fighting: for his students, against racism in higher education and society and especially to promote and preserve Chicano studies, a discipline he helped to create and push to become more than just an academic major.

In 1969, Acuña became the first professor in CSUN’s Mexican American studies department, now called the Chicano and Chicana Studies Department, which became an incubator for Latino activism in L.A. and beyond.

Rodolfo “Rudy” Acuña lived his life following a simple credo: “If you know something is wrong, you have a duty (not an obligation) to do something about it.”

Mexican-American Dreamer Julissa Arce Wins Luis Leal Literary Award - Free Award Ceremony and Discussion Takes Place Tomorrow, Feb. 4, at . 🏆

Award founder Mario Garcia, UCSB emeritus professor of history and Chicano/a studies, said, “Julissa Arce is a voice for the courage and fortitude of young Americans of immigrant backgrounds who deserve to be granted citizenship.” Now in its 21st year, the Leal Award is named for the late professor Luis Leal, distinguished professor emeritus of Chicano and Chicana studies and an internationally recognized scholar.

Jose Medina, a former Democratic assemblymember representing Riverside and now a supervisor for Riverside County, authored the bill after working as a teacher for more than 30 years. He said he taught ethnic studies and and that students benefited from “curriculum that was reflective of them.”
