Join us this Monday, March 30, at 5:30 pm in the Teacher & Staff Lounge for our next PTA meeting — plus Board Elections for the 2026–27 school year.

PTA plays a huge role in supporting our school — funding supplies, after-school clubs, student activities, teacher support, and so much more. None of it happens without our amazing parent volunteers.

Get ready to discover new adventures, favorite characters, and books your kids won’t want to put down! Our Spring Book Fair will be open March 16–20 from 11:30 am–2:20 pm in the cafeteria, and students will have the chance to shop for exciting new reads during the school day.

To make shopping easy (and cash-free!), set up your child’s Scholastic eWallet ahead of time so they can safely purchase books at the fair. Family and friends can even contribute!

🤖 STEM in action in Mr. Turnbull’s 4/5 combo class!

Students recently dove into a hands-on STEM project from iINNOVATE, an organization that brings real-world, career-connected learning straight to the classroom. This lesson focused on manufacturing electronic devices, inspired by a local Central Coast company—Rantec Power Systems in Los Osos, which creates parts for the aerospace industry 🚀

Following detailed instructions, students assembled their own robots, troubleshot issues, and tested the final product to make sure everything worked exactly as designed. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork were on full display!

Earlier this year, students also explored medical testing, matching symptoms and microscope slides to diagnose fake patients—proving that STEM careers come in all shapes and sizes. 💡👏

Today we celebrate an incredible educator, mentor, and SMES legend — Mrs. Goossen!

For 38 years in the district and 34 of those at Santa Margarita Elementary School, Mrs. Goossen has shaped generations of students with her patience, dedication, and love for learning. Whether guiding students through their early school experiences as a 1st grade teacher, inspiring growing minds as a 3rd grade teacher, or supporting learners as an intervention teacher, her impact is immeasurable.

She hasn’t just taught reading, writing, and math — she’s taught kindness, perseverance, and the joy of discovering what’s possible. Her classroom has always been a place where students feel safe, seen, and supported.

As she begins this exciting next chapter, we wish her nothing but happiness, relaxation, and well-earned adventures.

Thank you, Mrs. Goossen, for everything you’ve given to our school community. The Goose is on the loose! But she will always have a home at SMES! 💚
