All the hip people know that March 14th is "Pi Day." The numerical designation 3.14 represents the month and day as well as the mathematical constant 'pi'. Originally the day celebrated the wonders and fun of math re-enforced with food, in particular 'pie'. Armed with puns about 'pi' and 'irrational numbers' American geeks and wannabe geeks rule the day and the teachers of math are honored as the saints that they are.
The National celebration has grown over the last 40 or fifty years. Pi Day is a "holiday" of sort that has been acknowledged by the U.S. House of Representatives and by many states and cities. There are hundreds of different ways to enjoy Pi Day with most benefiting charitable and/or educational activities and organizations. Across the nation there are pie sales, "pi" prices ($3.14), "pi" discounts (3.14 %) as well as all kinds of "pi" runs and races (3.14 mile). On the Internet there are thousand of products for sale from tee shirts to pizza "pi" cutters in the shape of that Greek letter. March 14th is also Albert Einstein's birthday.
For a local group, handpi.org the prime directive on Pi Day, besides having fun, is to share food (pie) and help promote 'pi math' in schools. Last year for "Super Pi Day" the New Mexico Legislature again recognized Hand Pi for its work to promote "Pi Day NM." In the House acknowledgement Capital High math teacher Angellica Vialpando was singled out for her benefit event the "Epic Mathematical Race Of The Century." With the 3.14 mile "fun run/walk" Ms. Vialpando was trying to raise money for classroom supplies like graph paper. The event started 3-14-15 9:26:53 am ... the first 10 digit of pi (3.141592653) and thanks to the McCune Foundation the math students at Capital High got a grant for their efforts.
Happy Pi Day!

Robert P. Romero
City Manager
City of Santa Fe

Dear Sir,

Hand Pi LLC proposes a resolution that would license Hand Pi to a limited part time non-exclusive use of 240 sq. ft. of City property (or art) located outside the Water St. surface parking lot, in trade for landscape work on the entire area (approx. 2600 sq. ft.) known as Fountainhead Rock Place (proposed Cerletti Park).

Time Frame:
8 hours (daylight) daily use for 4 months is the equivalent of 1/3 of the hours of the day, 1/3 of the days of the year. This part time use of the land occurs on less than 10% of the total area of the Fountainhead Rock Place.

Value:
If the total square footage were considered as two newly created parking spaces, the value might be the same as two monthly parking permit fees ($140) or $600/month as two $10.00/day parking spaces.

If the 240 sq. ft. were considered as part time non-exclusive licensing of outdoor raw land, and were to be priced at a per foot cost similar to the nearby indoor retail space, its value would be about $600/month.

The value of the 10 hours a week of landscaping, watering, cleaning, and maintaining the rock work at $15.00 p/h (including materials and supplies) would be $600/month. The total for this ‘trade for service’ agreement would be for $2,400.

Activities:
Activity will be located on no more than three 8 ft. by 10 ft. locations. All activities, demonstrations, or events will be licensed and/or have permits as required. All activities or demonstrations will be appropriate, professional and lawful.

Thank you, Donado Coviello
