Hello educators! Desert Montessori School is hiring for a few different teaching positions:
-Toddler (age 2) Assistant Teacher
-Primary (age 3-5) Assistant Teacher
-Lower Elementary (age 6-9) Assistant Teacher
-Head of Maintenance
We are also looking for substitute teachers. If you want to work at a unique, supportive, collaborative environment, please reach out! We are the only democratically-run, teacher-led school in New Mexico. We offer competitive salaries, free tuition for staff students, and many opportunities for training. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to interact with such an engaged and hardworking group of remarkable individuals. Even on the weekends, there is always something I can reflect on from an interaction with a student that provides insight and wisdom to help me be a better person in my own personal life. I love the community and familial environment that is inevitably developed throughout the course of each year in the Elementary program. It is something that grows every day through intimate interactions in lessons, social scenarios, and through group conflict resolution. Mixed aged classrooms foster independence and social learning. The students learn not only from their teacher and their environment, but from their peers as well.

In Montessori, don’t students just get to do whatever they want?
In a word - no. Montessori education follows the student so that the teacher knows how to help them explore all areas of the curriculum. Additionally, a key component of Montessori Theory teaches students that their individuality is important and also exists within a social context. We each have responsibilities within our social context that help guide our decisions and actions.

The Montessori approach is for all ages! It’s a common misconception that Montessori is just for the pre-k years. Having the preschool foundation is a great start and keeping your student in a Montessori classroom through elementary (and beyond, if you’re lucky enough to find a Middle and High School) is even better!
