With heartfelt appreciation for a life well-lived, we honor the legacy of Joe Kelly Tombrella, a 2015 Santa Fe Texas Education Foundation Distinguished Alumnus, whose recognition is reflected in the attached excerpt from the Foundation’s 2015 program.

A proud Santa Fe graduate, devoted community leader, and visionary businessman, Mr. Tombrella’s impact will be felt for generations. His legacy of service and commitment to Santa Fe will not be forgotten.

💙✨ Building Stronger Students from the Inside Out ✨💙

At Kubacak Elementary, Mrs. Danielle Derouen saw an opportunity to help students develop something just as important as academics—healthy coping skills, emotional regulation, and confidence.

Thanks to an Illumination Award, her Wellness Wednesdays program became a safe and supportive space where students could learn, grow, and build meaningful connections. What started as a project quickly became something much bigger.

Mrs. Derouen shared that one of the greatest successes was the relationships formed through the program. Wellness Wednesdays opened doors to conversations and allowed her to connect with students she may not have otherwise known were struggling with self-regulation and emotional wellness.

The impact didn't end when the program concluded. At the end-of-year celebration, students received certificates recognizing them as "certified" in coping skills—empowering them to become leaders who can share what they've learned with their families, classmates, and peers.

🍪🧁 From the Classroom to the Community! 🧁🍪

When Ms. Lauren Juarez and Ms. Tanya Lanmon envisioned giving Culinary Arts students access to professional-grade equipment, they knew it would elevate learning. Thanks to an Illumination Award, that vision is now a reality—and the results have exceeded expectations!

The commercial-grade mixer funded through their project is now serving approximately 200 students each year, providing hands-on experience with the same equipment used in bakeries, restaurants, and foodservice operations across the country.

But the impact doesn't stop there.

Since receiving the mixer, students have successfully completed five large catering and community orders, gaining real-world experience while building workforce skills like teamwork, communication, time management, and problem-solving. Students are producing more efficiently, learning industry standards, and developing the confidence to take on larger projects than ever before.

One of the biggest lessons? Discovering firsthand how professional-grade equipment transforms productivity and quality—just like they will experience in future culinary careers.

When educators dream big, students benefit in extraordinary ways.

Thanks to an Illumination Award written by Ms. Carol Cabe, students were given the opportunity to dive into hands-on structural engineering projects that brought science, physics, problem-solving, and teamwork to life.

In this classroom, every student participated and found success—working together to design, build, and explore how bridges, skyscrapers, and other structures shape the world around us. The experience was so engaging that Ms. Cabe expanded the learning and even incorporated it into the students' final project!

One of the clearest signs of success? Students were so excited to begin the next challenge that Ms. Cabe had to slow them down long enough to introduce the lesson objectives first!

We are grateful to Ms. Cabe for her creativity, passion, and commitment to providing meaningful learning experiences for her students, and to our generous donors who make Illumination Awards possible. Together, we are inspiring curiosity, fostering collaboration, and creating opportunities that help students see what they're capable of achieving.
