I work with the neurodivergent community, people with ADHD, dyslexia, ASD and more, from parents of children and teens with neurodivergence,to parents with neurodivergence, to professionals with neurodivergence, (the whole lifespan) to gain awareness about the causes of shame, antidotes to shame, and ways of relating to challenges with greater inner tranquility to unleash their innovative, hardworking, resilient talents.
In this season of challenges (the Holiday Season) here is a tool that can be helpful and keep on giving all year long:
Fortunately there are ways to engage internal resources that can inspire the energy we would like to bring to the winter holidays.
🛠️ One of my favorite tools of transformation is the RAIN practice. It was originally coined by insight meditation teacher, Michele McDonald, and then enhanced by Tara Brach another insight meditation teacher.
RAIN originally stood for
✔️ Recognize
✔️ Allow
✔️ Investigate
✔️ Non-Identify
And then Tara Brach added a new N, just before non-identify,
➕ Nurture
R A I N N
✴️ Recognize--I'm feeling an emotion that is challenging
✴️ Allow--Rather than running from, fighting off, or hiding from that emotion, allow it to be.
✴️ Investigate--Where am I feeling this emotion. What does it really feel like in my body to feel agitation, frustration, sadness, anger, anxiety, fear, doubt, etc.
✴️ Nurture--bringing some warmth and understanding to the fact that we are feeling these feelings in our body... "Ahhh, frustration, yes, you are feeling frustration buddy. That makes sense. It's OK to fully feel this feeling. In fact, other people like me would likely feel like this too."
✴️ Non-Identify--this emotion and the feelings underlying the emotion are not ME, they are just passing waves. They will go by like clouds in the sky. I am not my emotions.
💫 How might this tool support you this week as you prepare for and experience Thanksgiving?
💫 How might being able to authentically feel the feelings you feel and being with them with some warmth and understanding FREE you?
I recently learned from a friend that buffalo and bison when wandering the plains, walk into a storm rather than away.
How might the RAINN practice allow us to walk into our internal storms and emerge more free?
