SFIS community, we are excited for the upcoming football season as we return to a District 5-2A for the first time since 2023! The SFIS Football team will compete against Newcomb, Cuba, Shiprock, and Navajo Prep in district play.

Our players face unique challenges as our student-athletes come from across New Mexico, from the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico and other Native communities. Our student athletes have attended both a north and south practice to accommodate where they live. Several players from southern areas rode the Rail Runner to SFIS to get to practice. Practice for the Northern players took place at the Ohkay Owingeh sports complex. Building a successful team requires an incredible amount of commitment, sacrifice, and unity from our student-athletes, families, coaches, and school community.

Our team had a tremendous offseason with all the hard effort our players have put in. We look forward to our preseason scrimmage against Socorro at SFIS on August 14 before opening the regular season on the road at Zuni on August 22 at 1:00 p.m.!

Yesterday marked an exciting milestone as Santa Fe Indian School celebrated the beginning of two transformational projects that will serve our SFIS students and Tribal communities for generations to come.

The restoration of the iconic SFIS Amphitheater (formerly known as Paolo Soleri) will create a dedicated space for Student Performing arts, storytelling, dance, performances, ceremonies, and educational opportunities while honoring its architectural and cultural significance. Alongside this effort, the new IT Operations & Technology Center will strengthen the technological infrastructure that supports learning, innovation, and campus operations.

We were honored to have Pueblo Governors and Tribal Leadership, SFIS Superintendent Abeyta and Board of Trustees, SFIS Administration and School Leadership, along with our partners from Buffalo Architects, Jaynes Corporation, and many other key staff and project partners in attendance as we celebrated this important step forward.

Made possible through a partnership between the State of New Mexico and Santa Fe Indian School, these investments reflect our shared commitment to preserving our cultural values while preparing future generations for success through thoughtfully designed spaces inspired by Pueblo architecture and modern innovation. Together, we are building a legacy rooted in culture, community, and opportunity.

Construction will commence on August 17 and continue throughout the 2026-2027 school year and/or until completed. Parents/Guardians, your child's safety is our number one priority. Rest assured that safety guidelines will be heavily enforced and taken very seriously. Thank you for entrusting us and we are thrilled to share this news with you all!

Congratulations to Coach Jarvis Morningdove!
Santa Fe Indian School is proud to recognize Coach Jarvis Morningdove for being honored as the 2026 New Mexico High School Coaches Association Fall Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year.

This well-deserved recognition comes after an outstanding season in which Coach Morningdove led the SFIS Varsity Boys Cross Country Team to the 2025 NMAA Class 3A Boys State Championship. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to student-athlete success have helped build a championship culture that reflects hard work, perseverance, and excellence both on and off the course.

Coach Morningdove's passion for developing young athletes and representing the values of Santa Fe Indian School continues to inspire our students and our community.

Last week, kids from 2nd grade to 8th grade took the SFIS basketball court as a part of a high-energy, two-day Youth Basketball Camp! 🏀✨

Led by SFIS Basketball coaches, several SFIS student-athletes, and Dominic Tiger-Cortes (owner and founder of HOOP Medicine), young athletes spent two days building basketball fundamentals and developing skills. The sessions were organized by grade level, with younger athletes attending in the morning and older athletes participating in the afternoon. Amongst the fun, we were able to capture a few photos to share with you all!

Dominic Tiger-Cortes is a professional trainer, Nike N7 Ambassador, and Native from the Muscogee Creek Nation. Amazingly, Dominic has trained athletes at every level of the game, from high school and college players to professionals, including Native American NBA player Lindy Waters of the San Antonio Spurs! Dominic's passion for the sport inspired the creation of HOOP (Honor Our Only Passion) Medicine! And we are thankful Coach Byron helped bring Dominic's program to our community youth!

As Athletic Director, Mr. Vigil brings extensive experience in education, athletics, and student leadership. We are excited to welcome him to the SFIS community and look forward to the experience he brings in supporting student athletes, coaches, and SFIS Athletics!

We would like to recognize the SFIS Facilities Department and Director, Orlando Yazzie, for their unwavering dedication to safeguarding our campus while students enjoy their summer break! 🎉

While much of our staff prepares for the upcoming school year, our Facilities team has been hard at working maintaining and improving school grounds. From upgrading HVAC systems and electrical infrastructure to renovating restrooms, their efforts ensure students return to a safe, welcoming and beautiful learning environment.

Santa Fe Indian School Elevates Campus Safety with Proactive Approaches The Branch of Safety Management would like to recognize Santa Fe Indian School, particularly SFIS Facilities Director Orlando Yazzie, whom we have identified as a Safety Champion for his swift and effective response to safety deficiencies.

Santa Fe Indian School would like to welcome Danielle N. Martinez from Santa Clara Pueblo as the new High School Academic Assistant Principal for the upcoming school year!

Danielle N. Martinez is an enrolled member of Santa Clara Pueblo and a dedicated educator with experience in school administration, curriculum development, and language acquisition.

She taught at Kha'p'o Community School and is passionate about preserving Pueblo culture and language for future generations. Danielle holds a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Northern New Mexico College and a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Adams State University.

She has been on the SFIS Parent Advisory Committee for two years and is very excited to be a part of the Santa Fe Indian School community as the HS Assistant Principal!
