"Learning to draw is like learning a new language. Drawing has its own vocabulary, and more importantly, its own grammar. The purpose of study is to become so fluent that the nature of the model expresses itself through your pencil effortlessly. This means receiving impressions from the model with an open awareness, and translating them into line and tone clearly and spontaneously. It means being able to handle anything, no matter how ‘difficult,’ calmly and easily."

Drawing is an art in itself. It is also the foundation of the art of painting. It is worth pursuing in it's own right, and as an absolutely necessary prerequisite to painting. At the Ryder Studio drawing is a focused study of shape, movement, form and light. The style is articulate, incorporating a refined approach to line and shading.

Figure Painting on a Toned Ground
Covering major topics of painting, including: drawing and erasing with brushes in oil paint, and the direct application of opaque color in a series of brushstrokes, proceeding from dark to light, representing the form and the effect of the light.

Figure Drawing on Toned Paper
Covering major topics of drawing on toned paper, including: how to balance the use of the graphite and chalk, how not to overuse the chalk, how not to flatten the form with the chalk, and how to develop the dark light with the graphite.
