A Place For Wonder

A Place For Wonder A nature and play childcare home I love spending time in the outdoors and am an avid backpacker.

I back country hike in many National Parks such as Grand Canyon, Glacier, Canyonlands, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Zion and Capitol Reef. I have two grown children who grew up playing outside all the time. I am now enjoying being a grandma (Yaya) and having the most fulfilling outdoor adventures!

🌞We had an amazing first week back at school with the kids. There was so much curiosity and excitement. We guided children as they explored new environments, relationships, and boundaries. Most importantly, connections are at the forefront of our days because children won’t learn if they don’t feel safe or seen.

Here’s to more exploration and play, all day! 🌿

How did we “teach” math this 1st week of school in our PreK and primary class? We didn’t. We kept our mouths closed and watched these amazing littles experiment on their own. They tested their own theories about angles of wood on a tree to be able to climb the tree. They tested various materials at various angles to see if a ball can make it through the entire track. They tested how various items move and roll when placed inside other objects. They filled containers with water to determine how much is full and if it would fill another container.
There was questioning, pondering, testing and retesting and collaboration!

If we were worried about the mess every time kids played, we’d be stopping so many benefits that are happening. They are developing their fine and gross motor skills, naturally reducing stress by increasing dopamine and serotonin levels when they are making contact with dirt, and they are building their immunities. It might take a little bit of extra time in the day to get them cleaned off and changed into dry clothes, but the rewards are immeasurable.

Sometime in January, I noticed a neighbor throwing away a shower door. 🤔 We snatched it up and built a permanent frame for it so the kids could use it for art and more.
Over the course of about a month, we gave kids tape to place on the door and then paints to fill in the spaces. Once interest wore off on both sides of the door, the paint had dried and then the littles wanted to pull the tape off. They loved making tape balls too.
During this process there were stories about the pictures painted, color mixing and collaboration. The process was joyful and the end result beautiful. They also loved “unpainting” with soap and water.
