The MFA in Studio Arts presents a lecture by Lehuauakea, who is a Native Hawaiian-Japanese interdisciplinary artist and barkcloth-maker raised on their family's ancestral homelands in Papa'ikou, Hawai'i. Centering traditional Hawaiian kapa (barkcloth) and sustainable materials to create large-scale installations and mixed-media textiles, their work highlights themes of Indigenous land stewardship, cultural cosmologies, and fluid intersectional identity. In 2018, Lehuauakea began learning barkcloth-making from elder practitioner Wesley Sen. Lehuauakea's work has been exhibited internationally and is held in prominent collections around the globe, including the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution National Museum of the American Indian, Portland Art Museum, National Gallery of Victoria, Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art, and Forge Project, amongst others. The artist is currently based between the continent and Hawai'i, having earned their Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting at Pacific Northwest College of Art.

The goal of the ICP is to empower the next generation of Indigenous scholars to share environmental stories and resilient solutions of relevance around the world.
