Here’s an excellent dissection, explained in evolutionary biology terms, of human predator deception and mimicry tactics used on their target prey.
Teens starting to date, singles and those in toxic relationships ( as well as those wanting to avoid them!) would do well to listen carefully.

This tragic story underscores the wisdom of getting out of your vehicle should it break down, and quickly choosing a safe spot that is *away* from the vehicle, to call and wait for assistance.
Drunk drivers’ cognitive imparements can make it so that they drive straight for whatever they’re looking at. If you vehicle is a broken down car with the hazard lights on, and it captures their curiosity, they may drive straight into it.
This, sadly, happens far too often.

Love can be a powerful force – for good and bad. In many cases of grooming someone to be trafficked, victims are manipulated into exploitative situations by someone they know and care about, such as a family member, friend, or intimate partner (often known as a “Romeo pimp”).
Generally, the steps for grooming and exploiting an individual are the same:
1. Target the most vulnerable individuals
2. Gain their trust through gestures of “love” and affection
3. Isolate and control by separating the individual from their community
4. Exploit by normalizing abusive behavior
While it may not always be obvious, there are signs and tells of whether or not someone may be developing a relationship with someone dangerous. Important information for parents, teachers, family members and caregivers to help protect the children in your lives.
Grooming - "A process by which a person prepares a child, significant adults and the environment for the abuse of this child. Specific goals include gaining access to the child, gaining the child’s compliance and maintaining the child’s secrecy to avoid disclosure. This process serves to strengthen the offender’s abusive pattern, as it may be used as a means of justifying or denying their actions." - Journal of Sexual Aggression, Volume 12
The objective of the groomer is to build a relationship with the victim. Achieving trust is the first step in sexually exploiting a child. This can be done in person, online or a combination of both. Predators frequently use children's own innocence and ignorance of sexual abuse to groom them. Read more about grooming and how you can prevent it in our latest blog.
