From the Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries:

Ebooks for Students, Families and Teachers Campaign

Everyone’s routines have been affected by the current pandemic, but few things have changed more than the “back to school” process for 40,000 Santa Cruz County students, their families and their teachers. Because the county’s 10 school districts are operating remotely this fall, the Santa Cruz Public Library’s online resources are more important than ever.

While Equal Access Santa Cruz is working to make sure each student has an internet connection, we are working to ensure that teachers and students have access to materials. We are pleased to announce that we have partnered Santa Cruz County schools for a new campaign to put electronic resources in the hands of our teachers and students. This year, we anticipate much greater need for these digitally accessed materials.

The Santa Cruz Public Libraries need at least $25,000 to add to their current collection. Can you help us in making this school year one of accomplishment?

“The Santa Cruz Libraries’ digital resources are fundamental to the distance learning we are providing in the Santa Cruz schools. As this process continues, we will be relying on them more and more” – Kris Munro, Superintendent, Santa Cruz City Schools

We are offering donors to this campaign the following thank you gifts:

The first 30 donors at $50 - Santa Cruz Warriors Stemless Wine Glasses and Corkscrew

Donors at $500 or more will receive a handmade facemask designed by Santa Cruz artist Susan Skirvin

Donors at $100 or more will receive an invitation to a live web interview on October 1st with Susan Orlean, author of The Library Book. She is most recently the author of The Library Book. Ms. Orlean will be interviewed by Nikki Silva of the Kitchen Sisters, as heard on NPR.

Susan Orlean has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1992. Her work also has appeared in Vogue, Rolling Stone, Esquire, and Outside. She is best known as the bestselling author of The Orchid Thief and The Library Book.

Nikki Silva is one half of the Santa Cruz-based, Peabody-award winning duo The Kitchen Sisters. The pair is best known for their shows such as Hidden Kitchens and The Hidden World of Girls on NPR.

Of Friends: A Librarian Reflects 07/05/2020

A lovely post "reflecting on missing the patrons at the library during SIP" by a great librarian from LAPL. Some of our SCCS Librarians' got to meet Glen during CSLA last winter.

Of Friends: A Librarian Reflects Libraries are empty of customers and that is sad as hell. Sad for library workers who not only love the musty smell of the stacks but also the everyday challenges of actual patrons! We pine for our books and busy workrooms but the unpredictable and sometimes unpredictable people who visit make libra...

Dear Library supporters,
Over the last months, Santa Cruz City Schools’ most vulnerable students have had limited access to books due to the closure of libraries. While the Santa Cruz Public Libraries has stepped up to provide literary resources for our students, increased demand across the board has impacted SCPL’s budget.

When school begins again this fall, we will need our partners at SCPL the most. Already, we are working to provide nearly every student with a library card and seamless, easy access to all of SCPL’s online resources. However, students are going to need more than that; without access to physical library books or class book sets, SCCS students are going to be relying on online resources even more heavily. To this end, please help us raise funds to increase the amount of eBooks and audiobooks available at the SCPL. If you can help, please donate.
