“In celebration of Juneteenth and the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California State Parks is offering a special free version of its Historian Passport — normally $50 for the year — for admission of up to four people per pass at more than 30 state historic parks throughout the state. Starting today through Monday, July 6, Californians can download the pass for free and use it for unlimited visits to participating historic parks from Juneteenth until the end of the year.”

Repost our moral imperative Michell C. Clark | author, speaker, artist Leslie Priscilla
I’m somebody’s Dad now, but I’m still young enough to remember when I was the kid always asking his parents, “why?”
Why does the world work this way?
Why can’t we change it?
Why do things have to be like this?
The answers never felt sufficient. And these days, the answers that I give my daughter don’t feel sufficient, either. Because when you ask “why” too many times in a row, you start to excavate some uncomfortable truths about who, and what, this world values. About who is worth protecting. About what is most important in the global market.
I’m the tired parent who wants his daughter to stop asking “why” in the morning so we can get in the car, but there’s also still a little kid inside of me that wants to know “why,” too.
The part of me that wants her to stop asking is the part of me that learned to stop asking, learned to conform, and learned to function within the confines of the rules that we inherited.
The part that accepted “that’s just how things are” because fighting it was exhausting and compliance was easier and the world kept moving whether I questioned it or not.
But my daughter hasn’t learned that yet. She still believes that “why” deserves an answer. And I don’t want to be the person who teaches her otherwise.
I don’t want her to stop asking “why.” I don’t want her to stop searching for answers. I don’t want her to let “because that’s the way it is” be the end of her curiosity.
Instead of raising a kid who knows how to succeed inside the systems we’ve inherited, I want to raise a kid who can imagine entirely different ones. Not a child who adapts to what’s broken — a child who refuses to accept that broken is permanent.
That starts with me. With how I respond when she asks the hard question. With whether I give her the convenient answer or the honest one. With whether I protect her curiosity or teach her to trade it in for something more manageable.
The “why” is inconvenient. It slows down the morning. It complicates the commute. But it’s also the most important thing she carries — more important than the backpack, the lunchbox, or anything they’ll teach her in a classroom.

➡️ Swipe for some ideas for how to celebrate and fight for trans people today — and always

In January Teacher Victoria attended a Verifier and Legal Observer Training facilitated by and for .scc It was informative and empowering. Since then, she’s expanded her volunteer work with them to include work on their Patrols Team and Lookout Team. For Patrols, she’s at local school sites a couple of days a week during morning drop off hours. There are many other volunteers who work other days and hours at school sites across the county. For Lookout, YARR volunteers, based on availability, provide support to local events that may have an increased likelihood to be disrupted by ICE/DHS. Her first event is in the near future.
In her short time with YARR, she’s met some lovely folks who genuinely care about community safety and take very seriously the threat and volatility of the federal government and their violence. If you’re looking for a way to transmute your rage into community action and care and resist fascism, check out YARR and see where you can plug in. There are more ways to be involved than mentioned above, so check out the link in our bio and let us know if you’d like to chat about Teacher Victoria’s involvement and experience thus far.
There is an upcoming Verifier and Legal Observer Training on Sunday, March 22, 2pm-4pm in Aptos. Link to register is also in our bio.

Parenting as resistance means showing our kids what care actually looks like. It’s letting them be whole people, inviting them into real conversations, and learning to show up for others together. Not perfection. Just practice.

This Thanksgiving, teach your little ones the truth about colonization.
As always, use this as a starting point. Take what works for you, and leave the rest. Feel free to share additional ideas or how you’re having these conversations in the comments!

You know what? Bodies ARE cool! 😎
❤️ Children are naturally curious about bodies. This is a great book to help foster non-judgmental observations and conversations about different bodies. Normalize body diversity, body positivity, and body neutrality.
