Bead Painting: an experimental group project 10/04/2018

Working on new project, my first as an MFA student…

People working with beads who may or may not identify as artists, are invited to participate by submitting artwork that is beadwoven, sewn, glued, wired, embroidered, soldered, and/or assembled by other methods with the intention of staging a public exhibition positioning beadwork as art.

The project theme was generated by members of the Bead Society of Northern California, is facilitated by UC Davis Art Studio 1st year MFA student Rachel Maryam Smith as a function of coursework, and is designed to challenge notions of “art” by working as a group and using a medium typically associated with craft.

I’ve been busy… This piece is 9 feet tall and made of 200+ strands of strung 11°s. It is being shown today in the Elena Baskin Visual Arts Studios at UCSC where I returned for undergrad art studios in 2015.
