If you’ve been thinking about having your Santa Cruz kid explore and learn in the great outdoors, now’s the time to secure their space at Fern Grove Cooperative Learning.

From scientific hikes to deep-dive history lessons and structured activities based on the children’s interest, such as paper planes and big cats, Fern Grove brings play-based and experiential learning to the great outdoors. It’s a unique opportunity for our young learners (3-10 years) to engage in rich, integrated and emergent learning, all while exploring the magnificent nature around them.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mamas out there! You are doing an amazing job 🩷🩵❤️

Inspired by our natural surroundings as well as the French Impressionist Claude Monet, the Fiddleheads (3-6y) created their very own W is for Waterlilies 3D Art creations. Each of their works is unique to the child, their developmental stage, and their own creativity. They practiced writing “waterlilies” and read a book about the artist, incorporating literacy into this project as well. 🪷🪷🪷

When our group showed an interest in construction and tools, we hatched a plan to make our own geo boards! We sat in the sand while we sandpapered our wood rounds, then hammered nails in various patterns, then used rubber bands, yarn, and sanded wood buttons to decorate our boards! Child-led curriculum in action. 👷🔨🪵

The Lunar New Year celebration began on February 17th with the new moon welcoming in the year of the fire horse! 🌑🔥🐴 We made paper lanterns and learned about the tradition of lighting the lanterns every night until smashing them under the light of the full moon to end the LNY celebrations. We also read the myth of The Great Race to determine which animals would make up the 12-year zodiac cycle, and read about the traits of our birth years. Wishing you all a happy lunar new year! 🌕
