😰Do you know what steps to take if you fall into deep water? Can’t swim? You do not need to know how to swim formal strokes in order to be safe in this situation! 🛟 Treading and back floating, while extremely important skills and necessary for life-saving, cannot take you to the shallow end! ⛓️You need to have a routine of linked skills LIKE THESE in order to truly be safe in the water! In this video, I demonstrate each step I take on my journey towards getting to safety. Stay til the end for a slow motion demonstration of how my air brings me up! No effort required!

🎉 NEW HERE? 🎉Hi! I’m Kelly! All skills except formal swim strokes are needed for this video. I have tutorials for each part that you see in this video on my page. Check the highlight tabs for the specific video topic.

⚠️As always be safe, grab a swim buddy and try this gently in shallow water first!

🌊Wanna know why I never care how deep the water is? Because I’m not swimming on the bottom, I’m swimming on the top! Once you know how to stay at the top you never need to fear the depth again!

😮‍💨🫠Wanna see what happens when I lose most of my air? When I deflate my life jacket (lungs)? Learning to breathe properly gives you the best chance at staying on the surface safely! Always inhale through your mouth and exhale (hum) through your nose to keep your life jacket inflated.

🫡 Remember: never go vertical if you’re struggling in water-always go horizontal and face up in a back float and breathe.

🤔 Do you know how to go from face down in the water to face up? Follow along as I demonstrate this life saving skill!

⚠️As always be safe, grab a swim buddy and try this in shallow water first!

Focus points:
🔎 rotate your body as a single unit as if you’re a rotisserie chicken

🔎 keep the head close to the surface of the water—no lifting!

🔎 your nose goes from pointing👇🏼to the bottom to pointing up👆🏼to the sky

🔎 arms out on your back; arms stretched forward on your front

🔎 exhale through nose as you roll to keep water out

🔎 immediately inhale through your mouth once you get to your back float

Thanks for reading until the end!

Do you put a lot of effort into your flutter kick with little to no results? Typically this is due to poor leg positioning and hyper-flexed ankles. I’ve been using Zoomers fins for nearly 30 years to improve my own flutter kick and have been recommending them to my students for over 20 years. In this video, I demonstrate how to use them to get smaller, faster kicks and to increase ankle flexibility and thus kicking endurance. Over the years I’ve bought them at the following places tagged below. Use them for kicking face down, face up and vertically.

😱 Are you afraid to jump into a lake? Have you mastered these important skills in the pool, but still haven’t taken them to open water? Watch me take the skills I’ve taught you in the pool to this beautiful mountain lake.

In this video, I cover differences between a lake and a pool, back floating, adding movement to your back float, treading, water, rolling over from your back to your front, front float, and swimming to safety.

As always, if you are new to these skills, please practice each one individually using the videos on my page safely in shallow water. 💦

🛑 Stop wasting your valuable energy by answering this 1 question: How much of NOTHING can you do in the water and still float? 🫠 Every single person NEEDS to know the answer to this question. What is your baseline buoyancy with only breathing? Asked another way: What is your body’s natural buoyancy without moving arms and legs? Even if you sink-let this happen without panicking—this feedback is gold!

Now you know how much support you can get from the water. But what if you DON’T sink and you are staying up more than you thought? Either way, all swimmers need this baseline information to avoid wasting needless energy.

Try this out to improve your tread and back float longevity and conserve energy for water safety!

Are you going to try this?!

How’s your flutter kick? Most people put way too much effort into their kick. As with most skills in swimming; less is more. An inefficient kick is one of the quickest ways to zap your energy while swimming! Watch this video as many times it takes to nail down these details so that you’re not losing energy by spending too much effort.

Key points in the video:

🗝️ the whole leg moves from the hip
🗝️ knees stay close to the surface
🗝️ ankles are loose and floppy
🗝️ the pace is quick but light

What NOT to do:
❌ bicycle legs
❌ lifting the whole leg out of the water
❌ stiff, flexed ankles

👀 Stay tuned for my favorite kicking accessory demonstration! 🎥

Can you tread water calmly in the middle of a lake? Can you seamlessly move from treading to back floating to rest?

I dove into this beautiful mountain lake to show you how I use my skills in a deep, cold, high elevation lake. Keep reading to learn how to navigate this environment.👇🏼

✋I wish every adult beginner was taught how to string together these three things for deep end safety: back float —> treading —> front float.

👀 In this video you will see me do the following skills:

✅ Tread water calmly using maximum breath control. Stay low.

✅ Before you get tired, get into your back float and keep breathing. Focus on inhaling deeply (mouth) more than you exhale(nose).

✅ When you’re ready to move to safety, get back into your tread, being careful to stay low and take a deep breath to keep your buoyancy during this transition.

✅ From here you have 2 options
1. Either add movement to your back float to get to safety.
2. Or, as shown in this video, do a front float with kick or swim to safety.

🤔Knowing how to seamlessly connect all three of these skills is imperative for survival in deep water. Neither a back float nor treading alone can get you to the side of a pool or to shallow water.

⚠️ If the skills in this video seem too advanced for you right now, please check out the video tutorials that I’ve posted on breathing, back floating, treading, & front floating with kick, on my page.

As always, be safe and happy practicing!💦

Thanks for reading to the end!
