After Elizabeth’s father died, her mother could no longer support all six children. So Elizabeth and one of her sisters left home to live with their aunt in Kenya’s Kakuma Refugee Camp.

Educating a woman certainly changes the trajectory of her life and the lives of her children. But would you believe that education can also flow backward, restoring dignity to previous generations?

When Deborah received an MBB scholarship to study nursing in South Sudan, her grandmother proudly declared:

“Now that my granddaughter is becoming an important person in this village, that makes me an important person, too. And when I die, I will have a box.”

A coffin was an honor traditionally reserved for the village chief. Deborah’s education had elevated her grandmother’s standing, too.

Today, Deborah is a respected nurse serving near her home village and an active MBB alumna.

When a woman is educated, her whole community rises.

Last month, nearly 100 girls at St. Bakhita Girls Primary School in South Sudan participated in a three-day trauma-healing workshop. Many are “Champion Girls” who courageously escaped forced marriages.

Together, they learned to recognize trauma, manage triggers and begin healing through movement, reflection and connection.

As one girl shared, “I learned that I am better than what happened to me.”

Juliet is a teacher both in the classroom and in her community.

She volunteers as a community educator, helping young people learn about important health topics like HIV prevention. A South Sudanese refugee living in Uganda, Juliet received a high school scholarship from Mercy Beyond Borders and now works as an elementary school teacher.

She's also using her income to pay her own way through technical school, where she's studying Early Childhood Development.

Juliet continues to learn, teach, and share what she knows with others. We're so proud of her! 💙
