Is a 4-year college degree still the ultimate ticket to career success? 🎓💼

With skyrocketing tuition and the rise of AI, more families are asking a critical question: When is college actually worth the money?

The reality is that a college education isn't a guaranteed golden ticket anymore. It’s an investment, and it’s more crucial than ever to gauge the return on that investment (ROI) for each college that students are considering applying to.

ROI takes a student's college tuition and expenses and measures it up against that student's projected earnings and career stability over the next few decades. The ROI of a specific college depends on many factors, including:

đź’µ Local or high-demand industry ties
đź’µ Alumni networks
đź’µ Internship programs
đź’µ Scholarship access

To truly determine whether a particular college is worth the money, students and families must take these factors into consideration and investigate the ROI of each college before adding it to their student’s college list!

đź“– Want to why ROI is so important in modern higher education? Check out our latest blog article: https://www.ilumineducation.com/blog-posts/2026/7/3/when-is-college-worth-the-money

When students build college lists, the prestige of a school is often less important than its ROI. College ROI, or return on investment, refers to how much money your student gains after graduation compared to what they initially pay for college. In other words, ROI takes a student's college tuition

đź’ˇ Applying to the University of California this fall? The PIQs (Personal Insight Questions) can make or break your application.

With 8 prompts to choose from and only 350 words per response, many students struggle to figure out what the admissions committee is actually looking for.

We recently hosted a webinar breaking down exactly how to approach the UC PIQs, and the transcript is now officially live!

Here’s a sneak peek of what we covered:

âś… How to strategically select the 4 prompts that best showcase your unique story.
âś… The "hidden" criteria UC admissions officers use to evaluate your responses.
âś… Common pitfalls that turn a great essay into a generic one (and how to avoid them).
âś… Brainstorming frameworks to help you extract the maximum impact from your extracurriculars and life experiences.

Whether you're a student aiming for Berkeley or UCLA, a parent supporting the process, or an educator guiding applicants, this breakdown is your clear-cut roadmap of the UC PIQs.

One university, two experiences. Which Emory is right for your student?

Many students don’t realize that applying to Emory University offers a unique choice: the high-energy Atlanta campus or the small-community feel of the Oxford campus.

Back in October, we sat down with Senior Associate Dean Giles Eady to discuss how students should approach this choice. We also tackled the "tough" questions:
🏛️ What has Emory learned from its test-optional admissions policy?
🏛️ What is Emory's stance on AI?
🏛️ Can a dance major really get into medical school? (Spoiler: Yes!)

Whether you are a pre-med hopeful or a future business leader, Giles’ insights provide a roadmap for a successful application.

Giles, if you don't mind, before we kind of launch into questions, you know… give us an intro,  tell us about maybe how you got started, what brought you here, and what delights you in the work of admissions.

It's time for a webinar throwback Thursday! 🕰️ We’re revisiting one of our most impactful sessions: a live Q&A with Trey Moore, Northeastern University’s Director of Admissions Engagement. Even as the admissions landscape shifts, Trey’s insights into what makes a Northeastern applicant successful remain incredibly relevant for the Class of 2027.

Northeastern has become a top-tier choice for students globally, driven largely by its signature co-op program and its rapidly expanding campus network. In this webinar, we pulled back the curtain on how the university manages its global offerings and what its views are on student AI usage.

Some highlights:
- Test-optional: How Northeastern views the SAT/ACT in 2026 and what "data points" they prioritize when a score isn't submitted.
- Northeastern's global network: A breakdown of the six different freshman pathways, including London, Oakland, and New York City.
- The co-op advantage: Why experiential learning isn't just for STEM and Business, and how Humanities students find high-impact placements.

If Northeastern is on your college list, this Q&A is essential viewing to help you understand exactly what the admissions committee is searching for.
