Congratulations to Emma Trelles, the new Santa Barbara Poet Laureate!

This is the day that Santa Barbara celebrates poetry by inaugurating our city's 9th Poet Laureate, Emma Trelles!

The newest Santa Barbara Poet Laureate is not only a brilliant writer; she is also an educator, teaching composition and creative writing at Santa Barbara City College. Emma is the author of Tropicalia (University of Notre Dame Press), winner of the Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize and a finalist for Foreword Indies poetry book of the year. She is working on another book of poems, Courage and the Clock. She is also a CantoMundo fellow and the recipient of an Individual Artist grant from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, and curates the Mission Poetry Series.

The priority deadline for CLAS writing and EMS tutor applications has been extended to May 25!

If you have an interest in teaching and enjoy writing, the position of CLAS writing tutor might be the job for you!

Many student believe they have to be perfect writers in order to become a tutor, but that is simply not the case. Writing is challenging for everyone, even skilled writers, and helping fellow students with that struggle is what CLAS is all about.

Job description:

CLAS writing tutors work anywhere from 4-15 hours a week. They meet with students on a drop-in or appointment basis in half-hour sessions to discuss any piece of writing at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming thesis topics to revising a final draft.

The current pay rate for individual tutoring at CLAS is $15.32/hr.

Job requirements:
• a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3
• submission of a completed application (application packets are available online at clas.ucsb.edu or in person in SRB 3210)
• one letter of recommendation (recommendation form is included in application packet)
• one academic writing sample
