The Santa Barbara Zoo sadly reports:
It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news that our second red panda cub, born to Ruby on July 2, passed away over the weekend despite receiving around-the-clock care from our veterinary and animal care teams.

After it became clear the cub was not nursing sufficiently, he was removed from Ruby's care on July 19 for hand-raising and intensive medical treatment. He remained in critical condition in a temperature-controlled incubator while receiving tube and bottle feedings, antibiotics, and continuous veterinary monitoring. Throughout his care, our team worked closely with experts from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Red Panda Species Survival Plan® (SSP), doing everything possible to give him the best chance of survival.

While the cause of death remains under investigation, this loss is heartbreaking for everyone who cared for these cubs and for all who have followed their journey. Ruby is doing well and has been reunited with Raj in their habitat, where our animal care team will continue to closely monitor and support them. Because red pandas breed seasonally, we would not expect another breeding opportunity until next year.

We are deeply grateful for the compassion and support our Zoo community has shown during this difficult time. Red pandas remain endangered, with fewer than 10,000 estimated to remain in the wild, making every opportunity to contribute to the conservation of this remarkable species incredibly important.

Last week, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office conducted a surprise bike and e-bike safety enforcement operation in Carpinteria.

Deputies issued 6 total citations including one adult and five juveniles.

Of note: Anyone under 18 must wear a properly fitted helmet while riding any standard bike or Class 1 or 2 e-bike. For Class 3 e-bikes, ALL riders must wear a helmet regardless of age.

Bikes and e-bikes must follow the exact same rules of the road as cars. Stop at red lights and stop signs, yield to pedestrians, and ride in the direction of traffic.

For Class 3 E-Bikes (Up to 28 mph): Under California law, riders must be at least 16 years old to legally operate a Class 3 E-bike.

Legal e-bikes don’t require a driver’s license. However, mopeds, motorized bicycles, and non-compliant electric motorbikes (e-dirt bikes) require a valid driver’s/motorcycle license and DMV registration to be ridden on public streets. Unlicensed riders cannot legally operate these on roadway.

E-motorcycle impounds are two days and about $750.
