Happy 143rd Birthday to Toastmasters International Founder Dr. Ralph Smedley, born on February 22, 1878, in rural Illinois. Given his role in establishing Toastmasters, it seems fitting that Smedley shares a birthday with George Washington, first President of the United States.
A few years before he died in 1965, Smedley concluded his memoirs, “The Story of Toastmasters,” with this advice to future generations of Toastmasters leadership:
“My often stated hope is that our organization may be kept on a personal basis, and that it may never become an institution forbidding and impersonal. … Let us never permit the machinery to become massive and complicated. Let us continue to be a ‘movement’ rather than an ‘organization’ or an ‘institution.’ … Our business is not to build up a great organization, but to serve our members in the best and most efficient ways.”
In the late 1950s, the city of Santa Ana, California, established the Dr. Ralph C. Smedley Junior High School in his honor.
