SBCC Vaqueros Hall of Fame Sports Information Specialist Dave Loveton, a beloved member of Santa Barbara City College and the Santa Barbara community, passed away Wednesday after an inspirational three-year battle with Stage IV renal cancer.

Loveton, 62, was an award-winning Sports Information Specialist for Santa Barbara City College for 15 years. He was a sportswriter for the Santa Barbara News-Press for 24 years prior to his time at SBCC.

We are incredibly saddened to report that Dave Loveton, SBCC's beloved Sports Information Specialist, has passed away after a courageous battle with Stage IV renal cancer. Dave never lost his positive spirit or incredible work ethic as he bravely battled for over three years.

Dave was selected as the only member of the Class of 2021 SBCC Vaqueros Hall of Fame and was also a runner up in 2018 for the Top Brass Award, which is given to the top SID in the state of California. Dave was presented an Everyday Hero Award by former SBCC President/Superintendent Dr. Anthony Beebe during a Coaches vs. Cancer event in 2018. He also built the SBCC Vaqueros website into an award-winning publication.

Dave Loveton was a perfectionist in his work and a friend to all. He sought to make every student he covered feel like a superstar and one of the things most important to him was to make sure he recognized as many students as possible. He also took great pride in honoring our coaches for their great accomplishments as well.

Dave's passing leaves a tremendous void in the SBCC family and in the community of Santa Barbara, where he lived for the past 42 years. He was an extremely talented award-winning journalist, a loyal Vaquero and his friendship was unconditional. We will miss the "big guy" every day. Our gameday experience will not be the same without him.

Wishing a very Happy Birthday to SBCC legend Carmen DiPoalo! Carmen was an SBCC football coach from 1970-2002, the final two years serving as the head coach. Carmen is a member of the SBART Hall of Fame & CCFCA Hall of Fame. On top of that, he’s a Hall of Fame person.

Santa Barbara City College Director of Athletics Rocco Constantino has announced that Sports Information Specialist Dave Loveton will be the sole member of the Class of 2021 for the SBCC Vaqueros Hall of Fame. SBCC will be holding a virtual ceremony later this year to honor the Class of 2020 along with Loveton.

A beloved member of the Santa Barbara sports scene and in the CCCAA, Loveton was hired by the Santa Barbara News-Press in September of 1981. He spent 24 years as a sportswriter for the Santa Barbara News-Press and has lived in Santa Barbara for 42 years.
