Dream Tending Dream Tending DreamTending by Stephen Aizenstat, Ph.D., is a method of working with dreams that considers dream images as "living images."

It makes the particularity and presence of these images available to the dreamer. The wisdom of ancestral callings, the instinctual knowledge of animal visitations, the musings of the soul are attended to from a psyche-centered, rather than person-centered, perspective. The "intelligence" of the dream is listened to from the inside out. To "tend" a dream is not just to interpret or analyze it. The figures and landscapes of dreams are experienced as alive and moving about with a certain degree of autonomy. In a very practical and accessible way, the craft of DreamTending offers the possibility of listening deeply to the voices of the dream images themselves as they come forward to offer their insights and perspectives. DreamTending appreciates that dreams carry an inner knowing, an innate sensibility, and an element of potency that affords each of us the capacity to open to the depths of our own experience. When we tend a dream, images come "awake," imagination is animated, and we participate in life more fully rooted in the way of the dream.

What if getting rid of the nightmare isn’t the only question worth asking?

In Dream Tending, nightmares are approached as disruptive but potentially valuable sources of information. Their intensity may be part of what asks us to pay attention to something difficult, uncomfortable, or perhaps not yet fully acknowledged.

Learning to meet these dreams differently takes practice, and can be easier when we have a place to explore them alongside others who are asking similar questions.

That’s part of what we cultivate in the Dream Tending community: a space to deepen your relationship with dreams, learn from their images, and discover what can emerge when we give them our attention.
If you’re curious about what your dreams might have to show you, we invite you to join our webinar, ‘Unlock the Transformative Power of Your Nightmares’, on Wednesday, October 28 at 12 PM PT.

You’ll gain both practical tools and a deeper theoretical understanding of nightmares, enabling you to work with these intense, often life-changing images.

These aren't isolated experiences. Across four modules and six months, participants consistently describe the Dream Tending Certificate I Program as something that reshapes both their inner life and their capacity to hold space for others, whether that's in a therapy room, a coaching session, or simply among family and friends.

The program runs January 15 – July 11, 2027 and will be live, online. It is structured around four modules, each one building on the last. Together they form a complete arc, moving from the personal to the collective, from perhaps first encountering the wonder of engaging with your dreams, to a developed practice that is entirely your own.

By the end of this program, you will:
• Have deepened the relationship between your soul life and the soul of the world
• Be able to establish intimate relationships with your soul companions
• Be able to tend dreams and imagination in the many ways that express their desires

For therapists, counselors, and clinicians: the program also carries 40 Continuing Education Credits (MFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, LEPs, RNs, and psychologists), so the growth you're reading about above comes alongside credit toward your license.

Reach out to us at [email protected] to save your spot (payment plans available).

Exploring common dream themes can be a useful beginning, but not necessarily an ending.

Rather than asking only, “What does this symbol mean?” we might become curious about the image itself: Why has it appeared to me? Why now? What happens when I spend a little more time with it?

That’s what Dream Tending is about: inviting you not simply to interpret the dream, but to enter into a relationship with its living images and notice what unfolds when we approach them with curiosity.

As you explore these six common dream themes, choose one that feels familiar and spend a little time with it. What might change if, instead of looking for an answer, you listened for what the image has to say? 💭

World Dream Day is the perfect reminder we need to keep approaching our dreams as something to meet, not decode.

We tend to see dreams like riddles: wake up, grab what pieces we can remember, search for what they might symbolize, then move on once we've cracked the code or given up trying. It is a habit that turns something alive into something to solve.

Dream Tending offers another way.

If that shift speaks to you, we'd love to have you with us. Come dream alongside a community that's learning to slow down and listen.

The same fall. The same chase. The same house with rooms you've never seen before, yet somehow you know your way around.
For many people, one dream theme keeps coming back across decades, sometimes starting in childhood and following them well into adulthood. Easy to dismiss it as random. Harder to sit with the question of why it keeps finding its way back to you.
Tomorrow, we're hosting a live webinar on the dream themes, and what they might be pointing toward. So if you've been carrying the same dream for years without an answer, this is your chance to finally sit with it.

📅 Tomorrow, September 23, 2026, 1:00 pm PT

In this lively and engaging webinar, we’ll:
🗝️ Explore some of the most common dream themes and consider how they can be approached through Dream Tending
🗝️ Look beyond simplistic dream dictionaries and explore how a dream’s images, emotions, and recurring patterns can become a source of insight, guidance, and wisdom.

Many tend to disregard their dreams. A nightmare that keeps returning gets filed under "bad sleep" instead of being asked what it wants from us. A strange image gets a shrug instead of a second look, and by the time we're fully awake, the details have already started to fade.
But each of those moments is an invitation. The nightmare may be circling something worth naming. The image that feels senseless may only need to be met with curiosity, not decoded. And even a few seconds of attention before a dream fades can be enough to catch something true.
This is the shift at the heart of Dream Tending: learning to meet dreams as living and meaningful instead of confusing or forgettable.

In the upcoming live ‘The Living Image Workshop’ with Dr. Stephen Aizenstat, you'll learn simple tools to start listening to what your dreams are already telling you.
