UNDERSTANDING and PREPARATION for the modern shooter

08/06/2026

Tired of going to "the range" and doing the same thing time after time? Getting that feeling like there's more to shooting sports than you're being exposed to? Wondering why your current carbine classes are all targets at like 50yds maximum? I've got the medicine for that, coming up quick on the weekend of September 5th.

After this week, I don't think I can express how much I'd rather be here

Throwback to one of the first field classes, I think this was either the first or second one. Small group, the course was about half the length it is now and not nearly as efficient. Nobody (including us) really knew what to expect from a completed event but oh how it's grown.

Winner!! At the Wi******er Canyon Gun Club 2gun match yesterday. This event is what introduced me to action sports shooting, taught me what to do and what not to do, and it's nice to come back and see how it's evolved from time to time when I can. The overall level of competition is better than it's ever been and I can't say I've ever seen it run so efficiently.

It's one week closer to more of this. As an aside, I've added a section to my website called "Performance" that will list a brief description of notable competition performances I've had, starting this year since they're still fairly fresh in my head. This is to support my feelings that instructors, particularly in the fi****ms space, should be judged on what they ARE and not what they WERE, and definitely not on a stack of paperwork. In my opinion if you can't find your instructor on Practiscore or it shows that the last time they posted a score was like 5 years ago, it's time to start asking the hard questions about how valid their programs may or may not be. Obviously there's circumstances this may not apply to, however right up front it's a great way to kick off a simple vetting process so you can make the right decisions for yourself. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions on this, I'm happy to hear them.

Likely going to make this Sunday's Wi******er Canyon Gun Club 2gun event. Maybe. Probably. Who else is going to come out and brave the heat?

Spent some time setting up/working with a couple Maztech Industries FCS systems recently, and I've got mixed thoughts on them. The laser rangefinder unit obviously I'm a fan of considering I own one myself, but I always caveat that with "as long as the situation is right for it". The FCS on the other hand is very cool tech and I like how it uses existing optics instead of trying to build a compromised fully integrated optic like some other companies do. I can absolutely see some situations where it would be a benefit to the shooter, but does it justify the added expense, bulk, and setup complexity? Guess that's up to each individual...

Let's load up, the next field class is around the corner. Should I make a quick video on my pack loadout?

The first ever Gold State Mile was a success! There was some amazing shooting from this group, many of them proving that you don't need a magnum to shoot a mile. The side competition was won with a 31 second single shot impact, and for that performance he took home a Warhorse Development Clede v2 bag.
