It is with profound sadness that I am announcing the passing of my dear friend, colleague, and mentor, Dr. Charles H. Wood III, who passed away earlier this morning.
Dr. Wood was my predecessor at Santa Barbara City College, where he directed the SBCC Concert Band, as well as the Lunch Break and Monday Madness Bands (the latter of which he formed for the college). He also created the annual Santa Barbara Christmas Brass concert, which continues on to this day.
In addition, Dr. Wood was deeply involved with K-12 music education, serving as conductor of the SBUSD Honor Bands for many years, as well as an adjudicator for the Dos Pueblos High School and Santa Barbara High School Jazz Festivals. In fact, Dos Pueblos HS recently created a new award--the Charles Wood Award--which will be given each year from now on to the top high school jazz band of the entire festival.
Dr. Wood was also a rather prolific composer, especially after retirement, writing several compositions for concert band and orchestra, as well as making arrangements for the brass ensembles for SBCC's Chamber Winds concerts.
On a more personal note, I had the privilege of playing trombone under Dr. Wood's baton for 11 years with the SBCC Concert Band, and for 2 years with him in SBCC's "Lunch Break" jazz ensemble before becoming his successor at the college. Dr. Wood, along with Dave Tolegian and the late, great Isaac Jenkins, taught me a great deal about conducting and music education--I would not be where I am today without their support and guidance.
Rest In Peace, Dr. Wood--you will be greatly missed!

SUPPORTERS OF MUSIC EDUCATION IN SANTA BARBARA--WE ONCE AGAIN NEED YOUR HELP!!!
This coming Tuesday (February 10th), the Santa Barbara Unified School District Board Meeting will have an agenda item to discuss the reinstatement of the 7-Period Day for our local junior high schools. Though they can't make any change that night, this discussion is a HUGE chance for us to show how impactful this change can be. Right now, students who are in 7th grade can't access year-long electives without coming in before or after school; neither can students with either math support, English support or learning disabilities. Adding another period would allow them access.
Also, the teacher's Union (SBTA) has voted to negotiate with District Officials about the Junior Highs' 7-Period Day, but the District has refused to negotiate.
We'd like speakers on the Agenda Item (don't know what agenda item yet), but more than that, we'd like people to join us for a rally at 5:00 p.m. outside the SBUSD office (located at 720 Santa Barbara St.)--and if you play a band instrument, bring it along to play! Then at the meeting, we'd like people holding instruments, art supplies and posters, anything that shows support for arts electives.
And if you can't make it to the meeting (or even if you can!), we'd also like to encourage everyone to email Board members about the importance of Electives in our Schools. Here are the Board Members' emails:

________________________________
Dear SBUSD Board,
I enthusiastically support the reinstatement of a junior high 7-period school day. Including a 7th period will allow students to participate in arts classes for their entire junior high tenure. Restoring a 7-period day will allow an uninterrupted path from elementary arts programs to the secondary level, bolstering high school programs. The arts help students develop social and problem solving skills as well as providing an important means of emotional expression.
Thank you for supporting our students by bringing back the 7-period school day at the junior highs.
Sincerely,
________________________________
Thank you for considering this and (hopefully) helping us out! The future of music education in Santa Barbara is truly at stake here!

PSST...HEY YOU! WANT TO LEARN TO PLAY A BAND INSTRUMENT FOR FREE?
The Spring 2026 semester at Santa Barbara City College starts up on Monday, January 26th, and once again, I am proud to say that one of our most unique classes--Beginning Wind & Percussion Techniques--is being offered as a FREE, NON-CREDIT VERSION (called "Beginning Winds & Percussion for Older Adults," or CRMO NC152) through SBCC's Continuing Education division.
The class is essentially Beginning Band for adults--you're learning how to play a traditional band instrument (flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, trombone, or orchestral percussion), getting to play classic tunes such as "Hot Cross Buns" and "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." NO PREVIOUS MUSICAL KNOWLEDGE IS REQUIRED--we'll even teach you to learn to read sheet music!
Best of all--if you don't own your own instrument already, SBCC has school-owned instruments (that have been sanitized, of course!) available for you to check out for the semester for FREE as well! The only real cost to you is your need to buy the "Essential Elements" band book (available from Nick Rail Music locally, or online) for about $10 to $15, plus inexpensive instrumental accessories, such as clarinet or saxophone reeds, valve oil for trumpets, slide cream for trombones, or snare drum sticks for percussionists. The only other optional cost is a $40 daytime parking sticker if you wish to park on campus, which you can order online when you enroll in the course.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED in joining this class--please contact me ASAP (message me through Facebook, or e-mail me at: [email protected]). The class meets Mondays and Wednesday mornings from 9:35 a.m. until 10:55 a.m. in room DM-105 on SBCC's main campus.
And for those of you already familiar with enrolling through SBCC's Pipeline registration system, follow the link here, and type "51042" when asked to enter the CRN you wish to add. If you have not taken an SBCC course recently, you will need to apply first (it's also FREE!), and then you can add the course. Here is the link to SBCC's website:
https://my.sbcc.edu/dashboard
And if you happen to be an SBCC student looking for course credit, you can enroll in this version of the course instead: Music 152, CRN 50138.
This is an INCREDIBLY FUN class that I have had the fortune to teach for the past 23 years at SBCC, and it is something that you will not find offered by most colleges--not even at many 4-year universities! So what have you got to lose? Please consider helping out SBCC Music by signing up and learning how to play a band instrument for FREE! And the more that sign up, the merrier!

Happy New Year from the SBCC Trombone Quartet! Here's a bit of "Auld Lang Syne" from the quartet's performance in the The Granada Theatre's Founders Room, where they did a pre-concert performance for the Santa Barbara Symphony's New Year's Eve concert! It was indeed a great honor to play for the event, and we wish to thank the Santa Barbara Symphony's Artistic VP, Elliott Ward-Bowen for taking the video!

Here is the Santa Barbara City College Trombone Choir's performance at SBCC's Chamber Winds concert on Sunday 11/2. They are performing Cody Anderson's outstanding arrangement of Frank Ticheli's "An American Elegy," originally written for concert band to honor those who died in the deeply tragic Columbine High School massacre over 25 years ago.
Trombone choirs have been used to honor the dead since the Renaissance, when they would climb to the tops of church towers in Moravia (in central Europe) and play "Equale" (instrumental chorales) to pay their respects to someone who passed away in the town. Beethoven and Bruckner wrote such works for trombones, and Beethoven's "Drei Equale" were even played at the composer's own funeral.
The SBCC Trombone Choir will perform this work again at the upcoming master class with Christian Lindberg on Friday, November 14th at 7:15 p.m. in SBCC's Fe Bland Forum, and also as part of their "Slide Show" Trombone Ensembles concert on Sunday, November 16th at 7:00 p.m. (also in SBCC's Fe Bland Forum). Admission to both events is free to the public.
