UCSB Interdisciplinary Humanities Center The IHC's programs in Public Humanities advance civic engagement through scholarly and creative work in the humanities and arts.

The IHC’s mission is to advance knowledge about human experience in cultural, historical, and social context and to do so through humanities programs that foster human agency, social connectedness, and civic empowerment. Since its founding in 1987 the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center at UC Santa Barbara has supported interdisciplinary scholarship in the humanities, the performing and visual arts, and humanistic social sciences. The IHC’s fellowships, research focus groups, and public events enrich the cultural and intellectual life of the campus and promote innovative research and teaching. UCSB faculty and students engage with community partners in the Santa Barbara area and beyond in collaborative problem solving and public creation and discovery. The Center is committed to advancing the place of the humanities in a public university and to fostering a spirit of free inquiry and expression. By hosting a wide array of interdisciplinary programs and activities, the IHC serves as a vital link between the campus and the community, and to the University as a whole through the UC Consortium of Humanities Centers and the UC Humanities Network. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Public Humanities Graduate Fellows are nearing the completion of their summer internships with local non-profits! Mingyi has been serving as a Social Media Fellow at State of Mind Café, a non-profit organization dedicated to the disability community and the broader pursuit of belonging. In this role, she creates content for the café’s Instagram account, designs posters for community events, and conducts interviews highlighting the experiences of community members. This engagement has given Mingyi a valuable opportunity to explore how social media can foster connection and help build an inclusive community.

Come see what students found when looking for Fiesta!

Junior high and high school students from across Santa Barbara explored the historic roots of Fiesta, including how diverse communities have reshaped the celebration to reflect their own histories and experiences. Their teachers explored the history of Fiesta in local archives to plan lessons that informed the student projects in the Finding Fiesta exhibit.

Finding Fiesta is part of Community in Action, a UCSB Interdisciplinary Humanities Center program designed to reinforce in K-12 students a key component of participatory democracy: the right, power, and ability of all citizens– understood in the broadest sense– to shape the stories that represent the shared public history and identity of their local community

This UCSB Interdisciplinary Humanities Center project was made possible through partnerships with the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation, UCSB Library, UCSB graduate students and the teachers who participated; and received support from the UCSB Office of Education Partnerships.
