Last Wednesday, 12 select students from 4th, 5th, & 6th grades took part in this year's South Coast Math Super Bowl Event, representing The Riviera Ridge School. They worked vigorously on the Multiple Choice & Problem-Solving Questions and used their building prowess to make their best & longest cantilever design within the 25 minute time limit. A cantilever structure extends horizontally without external support at its free end (e.g. a balcony that overhangs from a building). Each of our grade level teams finished in their division. Our 6th graders tied for 2nd place, our 5th graders tied for 2nd place, and our 4th graders tied for 5th place. Way to go Wes, Patricia, Aaron, Eleanora, Makani, Bodie, Jayce, Brooklynn, Asher, Genevieve, Kara, & Jack! You fill our hearts with pride!

This week our Teacher Assistantship Elective took a field trip to Michael’s to get supplies for the special activities they’ve planned! Each student has planned an activity to lead in our lower school classes, incorporating picture books, art, cooking, and movement! After getting supplies, they finished off their “teacher trip” with a special snack at Starbucks.

This morning 7th Graders visited the Jewish Federation of Santa Barbara to complement their understanding of their Holocaust Book Club selections in English. Students had the honor of hearing Holocaust survivor George Rusnak's inspiring story. They also enjoyed their Portraits of Survival exhibit, and participated in a workshop about being an Upstander. They concluded with a chance to ask George questions. When asked what advice he might have for students, he encouraged them to "Keep asking good questions." This act of curiosity encourages critical thinking, empathy, and engagement with the world. Students left in awe of the strength of the human spirit and reminded of the fact that any act of kindness or courage is never too small.
