In Studio Art this week, we stepped into the world of Bob Ross — happy little trees and all. 🌲✨

Students followed a guided Bob Ross painting tutorial, learning how to build landscapes layer by layer, mix color directly on the canvas, and embrace the idea that there are no mistakes — only opportunities to create something new.

It was incredible to watch each artist interpret the same tutorial in their own way. From bold skies to peaceful mountains, every painting reflected individuality, patience, and creative risk-taking.

We loved slowing down, trusting the process, and remembering that art can be joyful, relaxing, and a little bit magical. 🎨

Yesterday our students had the chance to visit Pacific Pickle Works for a behind-the-scenes look at how their signature pickles are made 🥒

We toured the facility, learned about the pickling process from start to finish, and asked thoughtful questions about flavor, ingredients, and small-batch production. The highlight of the day? Students got to create their own custom pickles — experimenting with spices, combinations, and creativity.

Experiences like this bring learning to life, connecting curiosity, food, and hands-on exploration in a way that is delicious (just like a good pickle).

At Anacapa, we intentionally create space for students to connect with each other — face to face, in real time.

Through conversation, collaboration, outdoor adventures, creative projects, and shared challenges, students learn how to listen, communicate clearly, navigate differences, and support one another. These aren’t just “nice extras” — they’re essential life skills.

When kids build real relationships, they build empathy, confidence, resilience, and a true sense of belonging. That’s how community is formed — not through screens, but through shared experiences. 💛

When our brains start to feel a little overloaded… it might be time to unplug. 🧠✨

At Anacapa, we believe learning doesn’t just happen behind a screen. It happens outside, in conversation, in movement, in creativity, and in moments of real connection.

Taking time offline helps our students reset, refocus, and return ready to think deeply and engage fully. Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is pause. 💛

For Synthesis Week, our Taco Tasting group took their research very seriously 🌮
Students explored taco spots across Santa Barbara and LA, tasting a wide range of styles, flavors, and approaches—then put their opinions to work by writing thoughtful food reviews.

Along the way, they practiced observation, descriptive writing, comparison, and critique… and yes, they also learned how to navigate a city on electric scooters in LA 🛴✨

Food as culture. Writing as analysis. Learning as an experience.
That’s Synthesis Week at Anacapa School.

Last week during Synthesis Week, our Land & Sea adventurers took learning beyond the classroom 🌊🌿
They hiked, swam in waterfalls, explored the coast, and even completed an 8-mile hike—pushing their limits while supporting one another every step of the way.
Along the way, students learned about local ecosystems, resilience, teamwork, and what they’re capable of when they lean into challenge.

We’re growing 🌱
Anacapa continues to evolve, and we’re so excited to share that we’re still accepting new students—and even adding a 6th grade next year!
If you’re looking for a thoughtful, creative, community-centered school, we’d love to connect 💛

🎨🏛️ Synthesis Week: Arts & Culture

Our Arts & Culture group spent Synthesis Week immersed in creativity, history, and storytelling through a series of three unforgettable day excursions.

✨ Ojai
We began at the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts, exploring the gallery and learning about Beatrice Wood’s life and studio practice. From there, students wandered antique shops, relaxed in the park, and explored the magic of Bart’s Books.

🎭 Ventura
At the Rubicon Theatre, students toured the space, learned about an upcoming production, and jumped into improv games of their own. We continued on to the Ventura Mission, explored downtown shops, ate at a classic old-fashioned diner, and made a stop at Rocket Fizz for a taste of old-school candy culture.

📚🎨 Santa Barbara
Our final day took us to UCSB, where students explored the library and makerspace, followed by the South Coast Railroad Museum, downtown exploration, and an Impressionist exhibition at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

Synthesis Week is about connecting ideas, places, and experiences — and this group did exactly that through art, culture, history, and curiosity. 💛

✨ Synthesis Week at Anacapa ✨

Between our two semesters, Anacapa presses pause on the usual schedule and makes space for something special: Synthesis Week.

This week is all about curiosity, choice, and connecting learning across disciplines — with students choosing experiences that spark their interests.

This year, students explored:
🌮 Taco Tasting & Food Reviews — sampling, analyzing, and sharing thoughtful takes on flavor, texture, and culture
🌊🥾 Land & Sea Adventures — hiking, exploring, and learning through hands-on time outdoors
🎨🏛️ Arts & Culture — creating, observing, and making meaning through art and shared experiences

Synthesis Week reminds us that learning doesn’t always look the same — sometimes it looks like tasting, hiking, creating, and discovering something new.
