Today our is Mae Jemison. Not only was she the first African-American in space but she was the first woman of color as well. Jemison born Oct 17th 1956, who began college at the young age of 16, received a not only a BS in chemical engineering but also her BA in African American studies from Stanford. And went to Cornell Medical school and got her doctor of medicine degree. It wasn't until Sally Ride had become the first American woman in space did she believe the program was more inclusive, inspired by Lt. Uhura from the Star Trek movies she went ahead and applied and was accepted in 1987 and finally made it to space September 12th 1992 as a mission specialist. Fun fact despite NASAs rigid protocol She would begin each salute that only a Trekkie could appreciate stating "Hailing frequencies open".
