Hello Everyone!
Happy Sunday!
I am a Boomer.
Even today, when I talk to my classmates, a few of them, surprisingly never knew that I ever played in a band, or that we were on the Gong Show, back in, 1977. 30 points.
I played in another band, who played at one of our MD school dances, but what is strange, is that we never had any mention or photos in any of our yearbooks. I think, it was because Merino or Dumas did not like that we played, “Ain’t Nobody’s Business,” by Taj Mahal.
I am a native SoCal resident, I grew up in Santa Ana, Ca., started pounding on Mom’s pots & pans at an early age playing along with, “The Monkees,” TV series.
And through these many years, after having a blast meeting, playing, and jamming with several other friends in and out of my area, some have had successful careers and some, had to sell music equipment and find ‘real jobs’….speaking of, anyone wants to buy a set of vintage, ‘73 Rogers Powertone series, 5-piece set w/Ziljian cymbals, along with a Ludwig Supraphonic Snare, thrown in?
Fast-forward to ‘76, 77, when I was a drummer for our group, “Pickens & Reid & the Boys with the Noise,” who played a mix of sh&t-kickin,’ foot-stompin,’ good-time, beer-drinkin’, bluegrass, country rock, with a little, off-the-wall humor tossed in. 😅
Our guitarist/vocals, James Howard Reid, [aka: Jimmy Reid] and Rick Mena, ‘Pickens,’ who played banjo, fiddle, and guitar, were first a duo, they played at the old Cassidy’s in Newport, and other venues, before adding the ‘noise,’ which included, Harmonica (Bob Landgraff) Bassist (Tracy Wiebeck) & Drums (Jim Tobin) in 1976.
Our very first gig as a band, was in 1976, at, “TED OWEN’S LITTLE BIG-O,” in Costa Mesa, Ca.
We played all over, mostly in Orange County, Ca., Main Street Saloon (?) - before it was, ‘Perqs,’ (Huntington Beach) The original Gong Show, (CBS Studios Burbank, Ca.) Orange County Fair, (Heritage Stage Costa Mesa) ) The Alpine Inn (Silverado Cyn) The Quiet Woman, (CDM) The Roads End, now Goat Hill Tavern, (Costa Mesa, Ca.) …our band was the very first ‘live band’ to play outside, before they enclosed it.
The Weigh Station (Mission Viejo) Capistrano Depot (San Juan Capistrano) Whisky Creek Saloon, and Mammoth’s Arts and Craft Fair (Mammoth Lakes, Ca) The Copper Kettle (Bishop, Ca) The Ancient Mariner (Newport Beach, Ca) to name only a few.
Jimmy Reid, wrote two original tunes, “VIRGO BILLY,” & “GOTTA GET BACK,” and we recorded both, at Ocean Sound Studios, in Huntington Beach, Ca. (1977)
Please keep in mind, that we recorded these two originals, waaayy baaack, forty-eight years ago, so of course, any studio recording would be far superior, far cleaner, more polished, than any, “Live,” performances.
My only regret? Is that we never went back into the studio to record more songs from our playlist. 😕
We had blast playing our brand of, ‘NOISE,’
I realize you can’t please everyone, but for us, we kept very busy, with Rick or another lining up jobs.
This was back when several restaurants that had a bar, usually had live music. ie: Rueben’s, Cafe Metro,(or Metro Cafe) Ancient Mariner, etc.
At least we had fun, and had a loyal following.
I’ve attached a similar slide-show of band photos as a back drop, I know…boring. 🥱
So here is one of two originals we recorded in studio, named, “Virgo Billy.” [The second is named, “Gotta Get Back.”
Have a Blessed Day!
Just wanted to post this to share, before anything should happen to me.
Jimmy Tobin
So for now, in all its glory… here is, “VIRGO BILLY.”
I would highly recommend, A GOOD SET OF HEADPHONES.
