Why the Orenda Way is the Way for Lee Arsenian, Orenda Instructional Specialist and Kinder Guru

"The Orenda Way means using best practices for all children.

It means watching students who struggle become successful, and children who aren’t challenged enough finally have the opportunity to go beyond what’s being presented.

It blends the right amount of differentiation with good old-fashioned learning standards. In fact, many of the educational best practices being talked about today were already part of The Orenda Way more than 20 years ago. It has always been a forerunner in educating students.

I’ve seen firsthand what The Orenda Way has done for Hoover Elementary and for the children who walked through its doors. That’s why it means so much to me."

Sometimes changing the odds starts with changing what we believe is possible.

Omar Zuñiga remembers taking in students another teacher had written off as “unteachable.” Instead of lowering the expectation, he made them a promise: you can do this, and we’re going to do it together.

They went on to outperform expectations.

It was a reminder Omar has carried throughout his career: students don’t need us to decide what they can’t do. They need adults willing to believe in what they can do, and systems that allow them to prove it.

What we protect says something about what we believe. 💙

Every school day comes with competing priorities. Another meeting. Another announcement. Another event. Another “quick” interruption.

And one interruption may not feel like much.

But minutes become hours. Hours become days. And over a school year, those small decisions shape the learning experience we create for students.

Protecting instructional time is more than protecting a schedule. It’s protecting a promise: that every student will have consistent access to the time, teaching, and support they need to thrive.

Because students may never see the calendar decisions happening behind the scenes.

But they experience the result of them every single day.

For our partners at Lincoln Unified, that means creating the conditions for educators to LEAP — to come together, think deeply, strengthen their practice, and stay focused on what students need most.

Our role is to create the space. Lincoln’s educators are the ones who take that work back to their schools and classrooms, turning shared priorities into consistent experiences for students.

Because the best part of partnership isn’t leading the room. It’s watching what happens when the people in it take the work and make it their own.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re honoring the educators and communities whose leadership, collective strength, and commitment to students continue to shape what’s possible. 💛

Sometimes the biggest shifts come from the simplest moments.

During a recent Guided Planning session with our partners at Salinas City Elementary School District, the conversation wasn’t driven by the facilitator. It was driven by the educators themselves.

As the team worked through planning, kindergarten teachers began holding one another accountable to their shared goal of 100% High-Frequency Word mastery. What started as a planning session became something bigger: a shared commitment to one another and to their students.

That’s the kind of leadership we hope to cultivate. Not simply implementing a process, but creating the conditions where educators challenge, support, and inspire each other.

One team member reflected:

“Great day learning with the best of the best! It felt so powerful to feel the energy in the room and the buzz in the air. The educators in the room were inspired to go back and implement this system as part of their protocol.”

That energy doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when educators have ownership of the work, believe in a shared vision, and know that the success of every student is a collective responsibility.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the educators who bring that spirit of community, connection, and collective efficacy into their schools every day.

“I haven’t been disappointed by one second of today.”

That’s what one teacher told us in a room full of History and Social Studies educators, just days before students would return to school.

But the work that day didn’t begin with, What are we teaching first?

It began at the other end.

What do we want students to know and be able to do when they reach the assessment? What will mastery actually look like? And if that’s where we’re headed, what needs to happen instructionally to get every student there?

Together with our district partners at Alum Rock Union School District, our team co-facilitated a day of instructional alignment—giving teachers time to backcast from their assessments, determine instructional objectives, share strategies, and think together about the learning ahead.

Because before you can decide how to get somewhere, you have to get clear on where you’re going.

And before the first lesson is taught, there is work like this: educators around a table, thinking together about what they want to make possible for students.

A strong school year launch isn’t just about having the right plans in place. It’s about whether those plans connect.

When opening systems are aligned, teachers and leaders share a clear understanding of what “ready” looks like. Schedules, routines, instructional priorities, and support structures reinforce one another instead of competing for attention. And most importantly, students can feel that coherence in their daily experience.

That’s the difference between a collection of well-intentioned efforts and a system designed for achievement.

Because alignment doesn’t mean everyone is doing the same thing. It means every part of the system is working toward the same promise: creating the conditions for every student to experience a premium education from day one.

Some of the most important back-to-school preparation happens before a single student walks through the door.

Recently, Achievement Specialist Erica T. spent the day alongside Mojave administrators and cabinet as they prepared for the year ahead. Together, they worked through the Instructional Planning Pyramid, tracing the path from assessment planning all the way to the decisions teachers make in their classrooms each day.

But what Erica carried with her afterward wasn’t just the work they accomplished. It was the intention behind it.

Here was a group of educators taking time before the year began to think deeply about how they would support the people who support students. They weren’t just preparing for opening day. They were building shared language, strengthening their practice, and thinking ahead to the moments when a teacher might need a thought partner beside them.

It reminded Erica that instructional leadership is something we prepare for with the same care we hope teachers bring to their classrooms. Because when leaders have the tools to offer meaningful, tangible support, that preparation has a way of traveling—from leader to teacher, and ultimately, to students.

There’s something hopeful about that this time of year: before the first bell rings, educators everywhere are already doing the quiet work of making a great year possible.
