Today, on Memorial Day, let us come together in unity and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. As we face difficult and divisive times, let us take a moment to reflect on the brave individuals who gave their lives for the liberties we now enjoy.

On this day in 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in her red Lockheed Vega 5B. She took off from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, Canada, and landed in Culmore, Northern Ireland, 14 hours and 56 minutes later. Earhart's achievement was a groundbreaking moment for women in aviation, and it inspired generations of women to pursue their dreams. She was a pioneer and a role model, and her legacy continues to inspire people today.

On May 15th, 1918, the Post Office Department started the nation's first regular airmail route between New York and Washington, D.C. via Philadelphia, with Army pilots flying the mail. By August 12th of the same year, the Department had taken over all aspects of the airmail service, hiring new civilian pilots. The following year, mail routes connecting New York and Chicago were established, and in 1920, a transcontinental airmail route linking New York with San Francisco was completed.
At the beginning, pilots flew in open cockpits in unpredictable weather. As one veteran airmail pilot noted, there was a fifty-fifty chance of engine failure during any flight. This posed a challenge to airplane design and maintenance, and through trial and error, flaws and weaknesses were identified and corrected.
The Department's aim in developing airmail service was, in part, to prove to those with wealth that commercial aviation was a reality. This demonstration was successful and in February 1926, private companies began flying mail under contract, and by September 1927, all airmail was operated under contract. In the days before passenger service, contracts for mail transportation kept U.S. airlines afloat.
