Metaphors can be powerful in figurative writing. The students who composed the following metaphors have each received a quarter-carat diamond to give to their moms since we began the Why Mom Deserves a Diamond writing contest in 1993. So far, 80 kids have received this grand prize gem.

1. METAPHOR: Comparing two things directly without using “like” or “as.”
* She fills my heart with caramel.
* My beautiful rose is fresh from the garden.
* She plants seeds of confidence. My mom’s the gardener of my life.
* Because she is all the colors in my life.
* Mother is nature’s way of saying, “Hooray!”
* She is my encouraging branch.
* My mom is a cozy place, like a warm cup of cocoa. (contains simile too)
* The sunset is a sign that she is in my heart.
* My mom’s like a calculator. Her love is exponential. (also a simile and analogy)
* Her voice calls upon the angels to sing.
* The warm hearth that has blazed me into myself.
* Her kisses—flawless bubbles.
* Yet an anchor, offering sanctuary from danger.
* Melting the iron surrounding our hearts.
* Mom, a perfect gem…a gift forever.
* She is the greatest wonder of creation.
* Mom is beauty and grace all put into one face.
* The precious pilot of my life.
* A book that never ends. A candle that will never die.
* Mom is a masterpiece created with love.
* She, who architects my very soul.
* Playwright of my world. Purest diamond. Divine author.
* Fragrant lavender of warmth and loving care.
* Her voice—a chorus of angels.
* Her kisses—a butterfly’s whisper.
* She’s like a nocturne, calming my soul. (simile + metaphor)
* Autumn’s sweater of warm comfort.
* Embraced within her soft touch, I am safe.
* Her flowing nature calms my storm. Mom, my refuge.
* She gave my breath its heat. She gave my heart its beat.
* Colored by her values, I am proudly adorned with her signature.
* And so it is I must behold, my mother, the temple of creation.

To all teachers,

The Why Mom Deserves a Diamond contest is easy to enter and is the largest writing contest of its kind in the nation. It’s still about the same thing: love expressed through words.

Since 1993, thousands of students have handed their moms a diamond, amethyst, or garnet - each one earned through heartfelt words. When a student wins, they don’t just give a gem. They give a story, a memory, and a treasure that lasts forever.

On the back of this photo is written, Oct 1991. That is the date Carmen and I opened Gallery of Diamonds. What began as a tiny boutique has grown into a mega jewelry store in Santa Ana. Today, nearly five thousand people visit our store every year. I am so grateful that Carmen and our staff have combined their talents to create, what we feel, is the most extraordinary jewelry store in the nation.
