Introducing the mightiest fighter in the Indo-Pacific… the peacock mantis shrimp! 🦐🦚🥊

Mantis shrimp are particularly famous for their hunting strategy involving punching their prey as hard as they can. They have two forelimbs known as raptorial appendages, and although most arthropods (crabs, lobsters, shrimp, etc.) have these appendages, the mantis shrimp has an additional part called a dactyl club. They use this club for hunting and self-defense.

Dreaming of a Sanibel Sea School night snorkel 🤿💭

Last week campers spent an unforgettable night under the setting sun snorkeling off the Sanibel Causeway. From exploring exposed tide pools to diving into sea grass beds, campers explored crabs and other creatures that call the bay their home. 💙

What's better than hands-on learning and career exploration at the beach? 🌊🤿

We recently welcomed 45 local high school students from FGCU’s Outreach Programs for a day of exploration, beach time, and hands-on marine science.

The visit was part of FGCU’s summer career exploration program, which helps students discover potential career paths while building an understanding of the education, skills, and experiences needed to pursue them.

Creating connections through nature 🌊

This month, Sanibel Sea School was delighted to welcome nearly 80 kindergarten and first-grade students from the Naples-based Grace Place for Children & Families for two unforgettable beach field trips.

For many of these young learners, it was a new opportunity to explore the Gulf, discover marine life, and experience the joys of the coast.
