Playing Amidst Things of Beauty: An Interview with Katerina Hamilton

"When my students enter the classroom, depending on their age and depending on the class, sometimes I’ll have them come in and stand behind their seats.

To sit down to start the day, they have to do something to “earn their seat.” So, it might be a question I ask them, but usually I’ll make it some sort of game, and when you win, you get to sit down.

This might be a good place to use poetry. The teacher points to the student who says the first line, and then the next student who says the next line, something like that, where it’s fun and engaging.

Also, having time to recite poetry together that is not judged or critiqued, or assessed in any way, is vital. It’s like kids learning a foreign language with their peers—you just mess up, you say the wrong thing, and nobody laughs or cares. They just tell you the word, and you move on.

So having that type of atmosphere is going to be essential for kids actually having fun with poetry. Otherwise, they’re going to think, 'If I miss a line, it’s a problem.'
