On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress, officially marking the separation of the 13 Colonies from Great Britain. Two hundred fifty years later, we continue to honor those who have defended our nation's freedom throughout history and recognize our shared responsibility to uphold the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for future generations.

On June 19, 1865, more than 2,000 Union troops led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to announce that enslaved people in Texas were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. For approximately 250,000 enslaved Texans, freedom was finally enforced and recognized.
As you go through your day, take a moment to reflect on what freedom means, why it matters, and the ongoing pursuit of liberty and equality for all.

Let us reflect on the sacrifices the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force made so long ago.
