Executive Flight Training

As some may know, one of out instructors is part of the PPilotWorkshopsteam. One of the courses offered is "IFR Skills for VFR Flying." It's not about entering IMC when VFR; rather it's about knowing enough about IFR procedures to help when VFR. A particularly good example of this was just uploaded to YouTube.

Amendments to the FAR making the ACS regulatory go into effect May 24 along with new ACS. I have not reviewed all the changes. Most are expected to be minor, but the new Instrument ACS has the big one many have discussed - the removal of the requirement to use at least one land-based nonprecision approach for the checkrides and IPC. This will be important in those areas where a realistic VOR or LOC approach is difficult to find and especially for those who chose to remove VLOC receivers from their aircraft.
See Appendix 3 of the new Instrument ACS for details athttps://www.faa.gov/.../instrument_rating_airplane_acs_8.pdf

BasicMed and Safety Pilots

As many already know, the BasicMed Congressional legistlation created an anomaly. As originally created, BasicMed only applies to pilots acting as PIC. That meant one could only act as a 91.109 safety pilot under BasicMed when in command of the flight but needed a third class medical if they were *not* in command.

Informally announced earlier this week, the FAA published a Final Rule on November 22, 2022 to correct this. As of December 22, 2022, "A private pilot may act as pilot in command **or serve as a required flightcrew member** of an aircraft..." under BasicMed.

The fix was part of a larger amendment which increased the medical requirements for commercial balloon pilots who, as of May 23, 2023, will need a second class medical.

The full text of the rule can be read at
