Could YOU plan a meal for yourself with just $20?

Our Seminole County Public Schools Project SEARCH interns recently headed to the grocery store for a real-world budgeting challenge!

From comparing prices to planning their own meals, our interns experienced some serious sticker shock! Who knew a pack of chicken or a can of soup could cost THAT much?!

What started as a fun shopping experience quickly became a lesson in budgeting, decision-making, meal planning, and independent living.

Because preparing for life after high school is about more than employment. It’s about having the skills to navigate everyday life with confidence!

🎃DON’T GHOST SCHOOL THIS OCTOBER! 👻

October is a great time for spooky fun, but missing school is one thing that should never become a scary habit!

A few missed days can seem harmless, but when absences start adding up, they can lead to:

👻 Missing important instruction
👻 Falling behind on assignments
👻 Feeling disconnected from classmates and teachers
👻 More stress about catching up
👻 Difficulty staying on track academically

Sometimes, the hardest part becomes coming back after you've been gone.

As we approach the upcoming 3-day weekend with schools closed on Monday, October 12, we encourage families to make attendance a priority before and after the break. Every school day provides valuable opportunities for learning, growth, and connection.

The good news? You don't have to face attendance challenges alone.

If attendance is becoming a concern, reach out before it becomes a bigger issue. Your school's support team is here to help and problem-solve with you, not judge.

Community-Based Instruction starts with experiences, exposure, and possibilities!

Highlands Elementary School students took learning into the community with a visit to Texas Roadhouse Sanford and the excitement started before they even arrived! For some students, riding the school bus was a new experience: “We took a big bus on a trip!”

Students participated in a scavenger hunt, explored the restaurant, and even made their own famous Texas Roadhouse rolls. Along the way, conversations about the future began. One student shared, “I want to be a chef like Miss Ebony!” while others talked about becoming firefighters, doctors, dog walkers, and teachers.

These experiences remind us why starting early matters. Community-Based Instruction gives our youngest learners opportunities to explore their community, discover new interests, build independence, and begin imagining what is possible for their future.

Thank you to Texas Roadhouse for welcoming our students and helping make their community a place where they can learn, explore, and belong.

Families, the next Low Down on Law is coming up!

Families of individuals with disabilities often have important questions as their loved one approaches adulthood. What is guardianship? What is guardian advocacy? Are there alternatives? What resources are available?

The Low Down on Law is designed to help families better understand these topics so they can make informed decisions based on the needs of their family member.

Topics will include guardianship, guardian advocacy and alternatives, Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) basics, ABLE updates, and more.

🍕 Sometimes learning in the community starts with a simple first like making your very first pizza!

Our Lyman High School - Seminole County Florida Greyhounds recently stepped outside the classroom for a Community-Based Instruction (CBI) experience at Marco’s Pizza. For some students, this was their first time making a pizza, but the experience offered so much more: following directions, communicating with others, exploring a workplace, practicing independence, and building confidence along the way.

We are incredibly grateful for community partners like Marcos Pizza Winter Springs who open their doors and create welcoming spaces for our students to learn, explore, and experience something new.

These opportunities matter. Every experience in the community helps our students discover more about themselves, their abilities, and the possibilities ahead.
