Happy Juneteenth Day!
Juneteenth is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19 each year. The name combines “June” and “nineteenth.”
Why June 19?
Although enslaved people in Confederate states were legally declared free by Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, the proclamation could not be enforced in areas still under Confederate control.
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced that enslaved people in Texas were free. This was more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and came after the end of the American Civil War.
How is it celebrated?
Juneteenth celebrations often include:
* Community gatherings and festivals
* Parades
* Music and cultural performances
* Educational events about African American history
* Family reunions and cookouts
Is it a federal holiday?
Yes. In 2021, Juneteenth became a U.S. federal holiday when legislation was signed into law by Joe Biden.
