Collected from the Sunshine state, coral is the outside skeleton of tiny ocean animals called polyps, which live in colonies attached to hard underwater surfaces. Agatized coral occurs when silica in the ocean water hardens, replacing the limy corals with a form of quartz known as chalcedony. This long process (20-30 million years) results in the formation of a “pseudomorph,” meaning that one mineral has replaced another without having lost its original form.

The gypsum rose forms from water-rich gypsum in semi-arid desert conditions. When it rains the water percolates down into the soil and dissolves the gypsum. Once the gypsum is in solution it is able to move easily and it collects in pockets to naturally form the roses.

A stromatolite is a fossilized colony of blue-green algae. The algae, which have long, sticky filaments, trapped sediment floating in the sea water. The sediment reacted with calcite in the water to form limestone. This particular specimen was collected in Brown County, Kansas. It formed during the Carboniferous Era (360 to 298 MYA).
