The Little Red Hen. Spelt grain.
Kids make it from grain to bread.
Honey Spelt Bread
4 1/2 c. Whole spelt flour
2 t fine sea salt
2 t active dry yeast
1 3/4 c cool water 70 degrees
2 T honey
Mix in standing mixer with dough hook. Flour, salt, yeast. Add water and honey. Mix until the flour is moistened. Knead until a stiff dough forms, about 2 min longer. Transfer to lightly floured surface. Shape into a ball. Set dough in a well floured bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled. About 1 1/2 hr. Dough can rise in fridge overnight.

For preschoolers let them add ingredients. Or provide Trader Joe’s premade pizza dough to play with while you prepare the dough to rise.

Preparation: have grinder and grain ready when they enter and praise them for being curious about the new items in the class. “You’ve got good eyes” “ you noticed the different items in the class! Great asking what this is!

They do the grain on their own time. All the children tried it. One kid usually loves it. Another will try to keep up. And one may have zero interest in. But most time every child wants a turn turning. Kids with sensory need two bowls and a cup to explore. This is a great transition from playing with water to grain, beans, play dough etc.

How does sharing work at the Hidden preschool? When children are playing with a toy I encourage the other child to ask to have a turn. This is done by verbal OT patting their chest. If they do not want to give a turn or are hesitant I encourage the other child to answer by saying yes or no or at least answering their question. What you will find the children do is ignore the question. And you will find that adults do this also when they don’t want to answer question. By answering they are saying what they are feeling at the time. However we have had to encourage kindness at the hidden Preschool. Kindness is when you share and I always say “Miss Jessica likes to share.” If a child does not want to share at all we problem-solving. we can’t play with the toy bc it has moved on to a power struggle and even if the child no longer wants to toy he will hold on to it. I will hold the toy until we reach an agreement/ solution . as for the little children, they are learning to share, and the older children know that the Littles are trying to learn how to share or ask for a turn. And they can’t learn what the word my turn means unless somebody gives them a turn so once in a while, Miss Jessica will say we are teaching the Littles how to ask for a turn.. Children can understand the word no at a very young age and the older’s know that they can say no . Children are very good at helping the Littles. Learn how to share by sharing their toys. It may be for a short time and those kids that are persistent have a good eye for the toy when the Littles drop them. Bc the littles attention span is usually shorter than the olders.
The kids are awesome and hooray for babies to teach us

So many problem solving opportunities. Put a pair of pliers in your school and see which child finds them and tries to use them. It became a battle for who’s turn was next. Opportunity! Problem solve!
